Sorry about all the duplicate messages. My computer kept telling me that they weren't sent (and it sent them all again today). I still will dig thru my stuff after Christmas and see if I have anything else of any interest to you. Thanks, Jack. Yes, I have ordered many marriage records from Illinois during the past few months, mostly from Gallatin Co. This has led to my new connections to the families who intermarried with McGehees. For years I have been on the Gallatin County mailing list and learned about the marriage search there. The Gallatin list is the most active one I have seen. About three people who are on-line there every night have "cemetery books" for the county. It turns into a sort of chatroom. These kind people sit there and look up burial sites for anyone who asks. Then they put the results on the mailing list. It has all led to some breakthroughs for many people. Some nights there is a lot of excitement on the list. Of course, it is rather inactive right now. You might want to sign up for it. [email protected] Thank you for your other email this morning. My faith has kept me sane (If I still am!) this year and many people and prayer groups remember Tracy everyday. I feel it has made all the difference. Have a beautiful and blessed holiday. Mary Ann
I received this just this morning from a lady in Logan County, Kentucky. The info about AMBROSE MAULDING and MARY PENDY is what I have a question about. Why does other information give her name as MARY PENDY PURDY? From what source does the PURDY come? Lory, Thanks so much for the info! Now, why didn't ol' Bennet name his children in his will?....sigh....<G> His wife must not have remarried after his demise, for they aren't mentioned in any estate settlement, either; Milly was, apparently, a second wife. Thanks for the lookups and info - both are very much appreciated! Happy holidays - Skip
Jon and all, Other myths I would like to see explored: Did Lincoln visit the Old Slave House? Did Lincoln visit the Charles? family home in Phillipstown, in White County, in 1855, as is claimed by local historians. The town of Phillipstown was almost destroyed by fire in 1871 or 1872, and it was bypassed by the RR, which made its site above the Fox and Wabash rivers less important. Cindy
Skip -- Nothing in Miner Book #1. No Shirleys in either book. But in Book #2: Palestine #2 Cemetery in Omaha Twnshp Hancock, Joseph S. l866-43 w Sallie J. 1878-53, s Jos. E. 1905- w Cora N. 1905- Also in Book #2, Glen Miner writes -- In this, the bi-centennial year of our Country's Declaration of Independence, -I must mention a few of those who fought to make that independence possible. Several of these later settled in Gallatin County. Of Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Illinois, Mrs. Harriet J. Walker in 1917 mentions twelve believed buried in Gallatin County. Most were pensioned. They were William Abney served from Va., William Allen b. Pa. enlisted from N.C., Stephen Boutwell of Va., Greenbury Choate also of Va., John Duff aided Gen. Geo. Rogers Clark and said to be buried near Island Ripple Ford, Abner Foster of Mass., Bennett Hancock of Va., Wilson Anderson of Chester Co. S.C., John Lamb of N.C., James Norton also from Va., Gen. Thomas Posey mentioned earlier as among first burials at Street's later called Westwood Cemetery, William Sutton also of Va., Robert West of Bertie Co. N.C. applied for a pension from Gallatin as did John Shadowen or Thadowen at age 85 in 1840. For more information as to service etc. see Mrs. Walker's book. Bennett Hancock's will was proved in Apr. 1833. He left his property to his widow Milly for her lifetime, except if she remarried, to her 1/3 and balance to her children and his children. Another exception was a small bay horse given me by the Methodist Society, which shall be sold and proceeds, returned to the Society for purpose of spreading gospel. I hope that this adds something. Hi- Decided I've been lurking long enough on this list! <G> For years, I've been researching my 3-gr-grandmother, Jerusah or Jerusha HANCOCK. She was married on 24 December 1833 in Equality to Moses Dale SHIRLEY of Mcleansboro, Hamilton, IL. I've never been able to prove Jerusah's parentage one way or another; a paper that my great- grandmother wrote says that Jerusah "was the daughter of Moses HANCOCK and a DALE from Tennessee". This same paper says that Jerusah was raised in Gallatin Co., and that her grandfather was a Tatem HANCOCK of Gallatin Co. A distant cousin says this is incorrect, and that Jerusah's grandfather, who actually raised her, was Bennet HANCOCK. Bennet died in Gallatin County in the early 1830s. Bennet's will from Gallatin Co. does not mention Jerusah or Moses. I have been able to locate a few records on Bennet: his Revolutionary War service records from the VA. militia; a record of his first marriage, to a Mary BRYAN, in 1756 in VA., etc. However, I've not found a thing about Moses, or of Jerusah's life before her marriage certificate..... Is any of this familiar to anyone on the list? Are any of these people listed in either of Glen Minor's books? Sure hope we can make a connection!!! Thanks so much - Skip in MN
Thanks for the info. Amelia Jane married into the Adams, Abbott, and then the Builberback families. James David and Thomas Reuben married sisters in the Hudgins( Hudgens) families. Any info on these families will be appreciated.

This is the information I have documented from records at the Hamilton County Courthouse. I have the probate records of John Coons and have found him in the census records. He was my gggrandfather. John Coons b. bet. 1797-1806. d. 1863 Hamilton County. 1850 Hamilton Cty. census indicates s/b 1797, but maybe 1806. John m. Sally Carr April 23, 1825. (Early marriages by Felty shows a John Coons and Susannah Locke were issued a marriage license in 1821 but no return) Children of John Coons and Sally Carr are: John Jr. b. unknown (not shown in hh in 1850) James b. unknown (not shown in hh in 1850 but administrator of John Coons (father) estate in 1863. Absalom Coons b. 1829 IL. William Coons b. 1831IL. m. Emoline Cook b. 1832. TN William d. 1863. Emoline m. Isaac Duvall 1870 in Hamilton Cty. and disappears. There is a gs in Digby Cemetery indicating she died in 1867, but she didn't. Actually no one is buried in that lot. The stone was put there by my uncles who didn't know where they were buried. William is my ggfather. Eliza J. Coons b 1832 IL(m. James Heard) in Hamilton County Winfield Coons b. 1836 d. 1863 .Elizabeth Coons b.1838 Caroline Coons b. 1841( m. Thomas Richardson) in Hamilton County Mary Ann (Polly) Coons b. 1843 (m. William P. Neavis (maybe Harris) 1871 Warden P. Coons b. 1846 (m.Mahala McGhee 1889) Hamilton County Rebecca Coons. b 1848 Children of William Coonse and Emoline Coonse are: Burrell Coons abt 1845 (single) d. 1878 Irena Coons b. 1847 (m. James Morgan 1875) Sarah L. b. 1859 Henry Albert (my gf) b. 1862 (m. Winnie C. Mick )d. 1955 All the children of Emoline Coonse were raised by different families in Hamilton County. I have found Henry Albert (my gf) living with the Beetts family. Maybe the age of 19 shown sb 9. He always said he was also in the Beasley family as a child. Who knows???? My problem also goes back to the John Coons. Which one is he anyway? I think everybody who had the name Coons named a child John. I'm trying to find his father. This is my story!! Thanks for all you help. I think my family came from TN to IL by way of MO. Cindy, Like the backlash against the Old Slave House, professional historians have long derided the story of the Shawneetown bank turning down the loan to Chicago. Even eminent historians such as Paul Angle claimed that bit of Southern Illinois folklore simply a myth. However, the problem with folklore is that it's usually based around a kernal of truth. In this case that kernal is a whole ear of corn. Between bank records from Jacksonville (the last of the state bank branches to operate) and, I believe, old Chicago City Council minutes, historians have pieced together the real story, which does entail the Shawneetown bank board turning down a delegation from Chicago. A couple of different researchers have worked on the story. The young historian who put together the history of the People's National Bank of McLeansboro, is/was putting together a piece for publication on the story. I haven't seen the records, but have heard the historian give a presentation last year at the living history days at Shawneetown. I can't think of his name right now, but his parents live in Eldorado. Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com P.S. Now that we've proved the Old Slave House stories, another researcher has proved the Chicago loan story, now all we need is for someone to tackle the Thebes Courthouse story involving Dred Scott. Folklore has long said Scott was imprisoned in the county jail there on the ground floor before his famous court case in the 1850s. Historians have long said the story is hogwash. However, I've never seen any evidence that someone has ever really researched the issue. Here are some other "myths" from the region's folklore that historians will someday probably prove as true. 1) The French fort at Equality - I believe it, but I've never seen documentation) 2) Knights of the Golden Circle in S.I. - Hyped during the Civil War, then claimed false afterwards 3) Dr. Anna Bigsby - She's real, but not a doc and a writer as claimed. Who was the real Anna? 4) Wetaugua - Either a Shawnee chief on the Trail of Tears, or a clan of the Cherokee. 5) Americans at the saltworks before the 1803 treaty - I'm working on it, it's true, but how far back? 6) Old Silver Mine - Not the known one in Saline Co., but an earlier one used by counterfeiters. 7) White's Massacre - vague remnant of Indian massacre of whites? by Gen. White? west of Equality. 8) Stoneforts built by a) DeSoto, b) Col. Clark, c) French, or d) Madoc. If not built by them, did they use them? 9) Logan's secret negotiations with the Confederacy - no proof, but what was he doing in the spring of 1861? 10) Charlie Birger's role in the murder suicides of two judges and their families - what's behind the two stories? If you have any more myths/unproven stories let me know. Most stories past down in people's families do have a basis of truth, the details may be off, but something happened to start the story in the first place. Sometimes, even ghost stories are the only thing that's left of a historical tragedy or death, that remains in the common memory. The ghost stories involving Anna Bixby surely kept her story alive to the present day.
I am researching the Mayfield that were in Gallatin Co. My gggrandfather and his family was listed on the 1860 census.I have been told they werefrom Shawneetown and Equality. John was married to Mary and they had the following children,Catherine, Amelia Jane, James David and Thomas Reuben. They left Il and moved to Stoddar and Butler Counties, MO. They show up on the 1911 records there. They then moved to Cleburne and Poinsett counties, AR. The info will be greatly appreciated. Elgin Mayfield @ [email protected]
