Aside from the James T Colbert family there were not many Colberts in Gallatin Co. The only Lucy Colbert that I find is the dau of James T Colbert and she was born in 1847. She could have had a dau Lucy but I dont have the grandchildren of James T. Then, too, any of the 12 children of James T could have had a granddaughter Lucy, but I don't have that info. I reviewed the info that I have on the Colbert Cemetery (also in Saline Co). When I was there I just copied names from tombstones of names that I remembered. No help there. No Oliver Quigley in my file. Sorry, but perhaps you can rethink your info. Do you feel certain that you are correct? If so, keep plugging away. If you are not certain, the chances are better that you will find your info in Saline Co. Just my opinion. Bob Black

Yes, there is a Gallatin County, KY. I was born there. I now live in the next county east of Gallatin. It is called Boone, after the famous pioneer, Daniel Boone. I believe that Gallatin is the smallest county in KY. The capital is Warsaw. It and Boone County are in the farthest northern part of KY, on the Ohio River, near Cincinnati, OH.. I am researching the SUTTON family which migrated from VA to KY to IL in the 1850's. It seems odd that they left Gallatin County, KY for Gallatin County, IL; but that's what happened. some of them remained here in KY, and some came back to KY from IL. My grandfather, WILLIAM SCOTT, son of ELIZABETH SUTTON, was one who returned. If anyone has any information on him or his mother, whom I believe married a man named Jones in IL, I would love to hear from you. If I may be of any help to you, please let me know. I have recently identified the parents of William Greer, born in Wilson County, Tennessee on 31 Aug 1827 and married Lucy Ann Johnson of Gallatin County, Ga. He enisted in the Mexican War 10 Oct 1847 at Shawneetown and was discharged in Monterey, Mexico on 10 April 1848. They had about 7 children. Has anyone researched this family and can produce the names and birthdates of their children. One was Alton A Greer who taught school, was a lawyer and States Attorney for Gallatin for several years. Will exchange data of ancestors for data on descendants. Thank you kindly Bea O'Quin/New Orleans, La
Good morning, Please excuse the "spam". The ILAR has moved to new quarters and is now fully automated. Thanks to Marceline Beem who did the programing that allows this. You can now enter and edit your surnames at will without having to wait for someone to post your entries. For those of you not familiar with ILAR, it is a statewide surname registry for Illinois researchers. http://tn-3.rootsweb.com/~marce/ilar/index.html Ginger [email protected]
My mother's mother, Edna Ruth Crest Syers, taught at Wildcat School, Hickory Hill School and Greer School sometime around 1920. Would anyone know where I might possibly obtain a picture of her with her students at one of these schools? Martha Baker Harpling
Text taken from "One Room Schools in Gallatin County, Illinois" written by Lucille Lawler. Greer School was located in Eagle Creek Township near Greer Cemetery which is in Section 10. It is thought the school was named for William Greer who was born in 1827 and who served in the Mexican War. He and his wife, Lucy Ann, had three daughters and four sons. In the 1870 Census, a school teacher, Thom Kinney, lived in the Greer home. Lucy Ann, the mother, was listed as not being able to read or write, but it is a safe bet that all the children learned at school. A grandson, Alton A. Greer, taught school for twenty years, worked as a lawyer for forty years and was the States Attorney in Gallatin County for several years. There were other gifted descendants who came from the area. Families represented by children in Greer School included Barnett, Williams, Brinkley, Stricklin, Vinyard, Hubbs, Patton, Hewitt, Frohock, Baldwin, Dutton, Jennings, Sweat, Elliott, Blake, Graham, Payne, Scroggins, Kingston, Potter, Dickson, Page, Baker, Casey, Belt, Pennell and others. Teaches remembered were Will Pickering, I. M. Brinkley, Jim Milligan, Mora Moore, Helen Womack, Virginia Baker Coyle, Georgia Baker Kennedy, Essie Vinyard Green, Joe Scroggins, Philbert Riley, A. L. (Bub) Oxford and Ruth Crest Syers. Martha Baker Harpling
Hi Lisa Could you send info on your Gallatin Co Ford's ? My Ford line is also in Gallatin and Hardin Co IL.
Bea......did I ever get around to sending you that census stuff on the Greers outta Oglethorpe and Greene county Georgia? So much as gone on, so much time has passed, I am lost in what and whom I owe what! Sure wish that William Greer was a brother to my Francis Marion! (I still think I have it, just lack the proof.) [I believe, note believe, that Abraham, son of Asa, is the one that married Peggy (Margaret) Kinney in Tenn., then had a son, William in Tenn. 1826, moved to Galletin co. Ills, and had Francis Marion in 1830...for the "family" only to return in 1834 to Tenn. and then in 1848 to LA. As they appear minus a male head of house, it would indicate he had died. I did find a listing for a man with last name of Kinney buying land in the same general area that this Greer family is found in the 1850 census, and he bought that land in 1848.] (This would be my mother's line of Greer...I know my father's line.) Still out here working so many branches that I get lost in the trees. God Bless, ear
