Looking for some history of the First Regiment from Gallatin County. Of the Illinois Mounted Volunteers, commanded by Lieut, John Willis, enrolled on May 15th, 1832 and mustered out on August 12, 1832. My ancestor in this group was Richard Tarlton. You can get the whole roster on the Gallatin County GenWeb. Anyone know anything about this regiment? Pope county also has some volunteers in the First Regiment.

I have recently traced my family back to Johann Dietrich Gaumer born 1619 in Stuttgart, Germany and wife Barbara ? born about 1633 in Adelshofen, Baden Province, Germany. They are my 8th great-grandparents. One of their sons, Johann Lorenz GAUMER b 1655 married Catherine ? b about 1662. Their children were also born in Adelshofen; son Johann Christoph GAUMER had 9 childred, the last born in 1725 in Germany. I have not yet found the date of death, but he was buried in Lancaster Co, PA. Does anyone have any relationship to this family?

How far is it to Gallatin County from St. Louis? Of course, I won't get anywhere near there until possibly this summer because I live in West Virginia. I thought Halley could be a variation on Haley. My great-grandmother was Sarah Ellen Haley and she married Lorenzo Dow Maulding. Sarah was from Gallatin County and Lorenzo from Hamilton County. Sarahs, mother, Eliza C. Gates married Mike Haley and I think he may have been born in Ireland. When he died she married a Burns and my great-grandmother at times, went by the Burns surname. My great-grandmother also had a brother named John H. Haley and I have some info on him. If you sould find out that any of these are related to you, let me know and I can share some information with you. Hello, This isn't genealogical, but historical. Someone recently sent a message to the Daily Register asking about the old Lucky Leroy show that aired on WSIL Channel 3 back in the 1950s. I'm part of the Uncle Briggs generation (see there is a genealogical thread), and just barely know about Cactus Pete, so I was thrown for a loop with Lucky Leroy. The writer also remembered the Colonel Bleep and Captain Comet show sponsored by Red Wing shoes. Last year the Pope county list got off on an interesting discussion of movies filmed in Southern Illinois, I am wondering if some of the folks on this list who remember these shows, and other locally-produced television efforts can provide some details. Any memories will be forwarded to the interested party. Thank you, Jon Musgrave www.IllinoisHistory.com www.BlueHerons.com - Southern Illinois News, Information, and Links
Bonnie, I don't have any info directly on your family--I know there are Talleys in both Gallatin and White County--but have some general thoughts about your research. 1. I think you need to do some census work, going forward and backward from what you know is part of your family. You can get census microfilms with CDs of the microfilms just starting to be available, and most of the Gallatin Co. censuses have been transcribed into books. >From 1850 on the census records list everyone in the household and there state of birth. Most genealogy programs allow you to enter census information to your records on individuals. 2. As to 1805 records, it will be hard to find much more than perhaps some family bible records or information from wills or other probate documents, that is, if your family members were around long enough to have enough property to have wills and probate files. Again, you have to go backwards and find who died when and see what's available. Gallatin Co. does have a published probate index, but I have never seen a book of wills. The courthouse in Shawneetown tries to be helpful. I am also a big fan of old county histories and all kinds of family history books. 3. As to the name, I have learned to take anything close as potentially my family. Some of your ancestors might have been illiterate, and the census takers didn't usually get spellings and recorded the name as they heard it. 4. It sounds like you could use some more info on how to do genealogy--there are many things available on the internet or in bookstores on in your area genealogy library. I was lucky enough to have the ladies who set up our genealogy in White County (IL) to help me get started. Cindy Birk Conley Carmi, IL
Dear Linda in Utah, Thanks so much for the Welcome!! The Hays boys had only a few children when they appear in the 1850 Census of Hamilton County. John was married in 1841 and William in 1850. I was sent the marriage of Reuben Hays and Mary Carter from someone on the Carter list. They came from Greene County, Tennessee it seems. They were married October 18, 1810. Now I have to find where and when Reuben died or departed this family before their arrival in Gallatin County, Illinois. Thanks for the help!!! Carla [email protected]
Could anyone tell how to find a birth record...or ANY kind of record dating back at least to 1805? I am searching for ANY information on Obadiah D. TALLEY--(he was born in Guilford County, NC) in 1805 or 1806. One of his sons, Andrew Jackson TALLEY---I've been told was born in Tennessee in 1835, but really not sure of birthplace. On some lists, I am told that Andrew went by the name "Jack". Jack had only 2 children, sons. One was Andrew Sherman TALLEY--born in Illinois, I was told, in 1871. He went by the name Sherman on some lists. His brother, William David TALLEY, was my Grandfather, and I have been told that he was born in Illinois, also. He was born in 1876. On alot of lists, my line is incorrectly spelled as TALLY. I have found my line under TALLY when I couldn't get it under TALLEY!! If you could tell me HOW or WHERE to look for information, I would greatly appreciate it!! May God bless one and all. :-) Sincerely; Bonnie TALLEY Polston ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
