Hi, Perhaps this will help you some. It's quoted from A History of Fulton County, Illinois in Spoon River Country: 1818-1968, Fulton County Board of Supervisors, 1968, p. 112. "A man by the name of Smith supposedly founded the town, we are told, but this was not the case. The church, a school, and a blacksmith shop preceded him by 30 years. These gave the railroad a target, and Smith an opportunity to sell lots. Smith went on to Oklahoma when the railroad came in 1868, but his name has remained." I bet you'll find his given name in Fulton County deed records. My mother was born in Smithfield, and I'd certainly like to see the town someday. I research the following Fulton surnames: Chenoweth, Smith, Beaird, Drummond, Langston, Hasty.
