Hi, List, I just had an unpleasant talk, (long-distance; my expense), with a 'Joyce', who works in the Fulton County Circuit Court under Mary Hampton. I had ordered Wills for Genealogical purposes in 1998; sent a check and waited. The $20 check for 3 Wills was cashed, and I thought 6 months was a little long to hear nothing; So, I called Mary Hampton's office in February of this year. She promised to have someone 'take care of it'. I waited 2 more months and called her again. This time I was told that the girl who handles these requests was on vacation, but she would see to it that I got the Wills. I received them April of 1999. 'Joyce', however, says she sends out Wills within 6weeks. (?) I also received a letter, saying that they weren't sending one of the Wills until they received another $30.00. I figured this was an incentive NOT to get this will, so I declined. I sent in a M.O. for $10 on May 28, 1999 for another Will. request. 'Joyce' took that $10 and applied it to what I would owe if I got the expensive Will which, of course, I didn't receive, and no longer want. It is now September. I called Illinois again and 'Joyce', who talks to criminals the same way she talks to Genealogists, informed me that I should go through the Fulton Co. Genealogical Society if I wanted to order Wills. Excuse me, it's a little late for that. But next time, you bet I will go through the Genealogical Society. I asked her why I hadn't recieved the 1 Will which I sent a $10 M.O. for on June 2,and also, I had sent in another order on July 30, 1999 and still hadn't heard anything from them. She reiterated, that I owed them money for the Will (the $30 one) which was never sent to me; and that the high cost was due to copying all the receipts. I told her I didn't WANT copies of receipts..I wanted to keep the cost down and had stated that in my letter. (She acted as if I was trying to pull a heist) ! I said I didn't want any Will for $30.00.and, please, just send the others! She said I didn't have enough money, as she had already used the $10 M.O. So, she has a check for $30.00 and a request for 7 Wills plus the the extra 8th unpaid for Will. She informed me that I didn't have enough MONEY to cover the cost of 'research'.She will send me a letter, telling me how much I owe her. Are these Wills her personal property? I might mention, I include the PACKET numbers and the PAGE numbers; so, it's a matter of copying these Wills. She said she used the $10 M.O. because that covered her "research". (?) I think it is appalling that this person is responsible for making these copies, handling checks and Money orders and dealing with the public. I am sorry for Fulton County, which I dearly love, and everyone else in the courthouse, as they have always been splendid to deal with... So, if any of you, out there, are waiting for Wills from Fulton County, you might want to call Mary Hampton, the Clerk of the Circuit Court; (you will, of course, get 'Joyce'). The phone number is 309 547-3041. Be prepared; no amount of logic will work; 'you are wrong' and 'Joyce' is holding all the cards. Judith Goodwin Florida (right in the path of the hurricane).
