Good evening Listers, I found that you can narrow down your search to first names with no last name at all in some rural areas of the 1880 census. Margaret has made a good clarifying point about the 1880 LDS census index transcription. That is all it is. An index transcription, but oh what a wonderful tool. I have found individuals living with other family members of different surnames using their site. Then, using the detail information given, I go to Ancestry.com and look up the actual page, print it and save it to my system so I have, not only a printed copy (documentation), but I also have the Mr. Sid copy on my system which allows me to zoom and pan the census document for deeper research. Even with being extra cautious about sources on the internet, this electronic searching is just too wonderful. It is absolutely wonderful that this transcription is available. . . but do keep in mind that it is a transcription not the census itself. Once you find your folks on the 1880 transcription, you'll probably still want to look at the census images to double-check the transcriber's interpretation.
