Excellent map! Thank you, Alice. I am struck by the odd division between the Ellisville and Young Hickory townships. I imagine there is an interesting history to explain why what should have been a single township ended up being two townships. Perhaps the name of one of them, Young Hickory, provides a clue. Young Hickory was the nickname of the 11th president Jame K. Polk. Could the western third of the region have been Whig country, supporting John Quincy Adams and Henry Clay, while the eastern two-thirds was populated with Jacksonian Democrats? Does anyone know the history of this corner of Fulton County? Ah! I finally satisfied my curiosity about why Ellisville township appears to be split off of Young Hickory township. According to Spoon River Charlie: When the townships were created in 1849, it was found that Ellisville was directly on the line between Deerfield and Young Hickory Townships. Consequently, a new township was created by taking two sections from the northwest side of Deerfield, and twelve sections from the west side of Young Hickory. This makes Ellisville the smallest of the townships of the county. Apparently, it had nothing to do with politics. How disappointing! You can read more of what Charlie Parkinson has to say about Ellisville here... http://cop42.tripod.com/ellisville.htm And Charlie's main page, which points to lots of useful Illinois history, can be found at... http://cop42.tripod.com/index2.html Wishing all a Happy New Year! -- Steve Haffner --- Steve Haffner <[email protected]> wrote: > Excellent map!
