I finally found a Piatt family listed as Pian. Reading the letters is hard and of course those of us accustomed to the names can more easily decipher letters as we know who was living in the areas. Thus use some imagination if you can't find a name. This last one I found by looking and looking for the woman's name, approx. age, and place of birth. Jerilyn
Another Census Story: If you believe that your family should be listed in the census records (they are there in 1850, and 1870 but not 1860), then you should look over the census records carefully, because they very well may be there under another name. I had that problem in Douglas County, Illinois, having found my Boruff family in 1850 and 1870, but not 1860. In looking at each page carefully for 1860, I found them but their surname was listed as Brothers. Not that they couldn't have moved away and come back, but it is always better to check first where you know they were, and then, if you can't find them look at neighboring counties, states, etc.
