I was looking through the Marshalltown, Iowa census for, I think it was 1920, and found where every inmate in an asylum was noted as being "single" and not married. There was a note written across the page that said that everyone was counted as being "single" just because they were in the asylum! Maybe it had to do with laws and power of attorney.
