Hello, I am new to the list. I have subscribed in order to try to track down some information on the family of Jay C. and Elizabeth Tompkins who setted in Fulton County circa 1870. They migrated there from Schoharie County, New York. But both were born in Albany County, NY, which is nearby Schoharie County. Unfortunately my notes on the Tompkins are buried with the rest of my files (I am in the middle of a move), so I cannot be more precise. But they would have both been born about 1818-1822. At least one of their children moved with them to Fulton County. I am not related to the Tompkins and I am not exactly doing genealogical work on their family. Rather, I am interested in the Tompkins as part of a history I am writing on the area where they lived in Schoharie County, New York. I am interested in the Tompkins for several reasons. One is that they were very active participants in the 1840s rural uprising known as the Anti-Rent war. (Much of the land in the Albany/Schoharie area was held under leasehold and it was not for sale. The Tompkins and other tenant farmers demanded the right to purchase their land.) I am also interested in trying to figure out what kind of agriculture the Tompkins practiced. I believe that they were cattle/stock farmers, but I am not certain about this. I would appreciate any information that you have on this family. And I am more than happy to dig out my notes and share what I have. Thanks very much Ian McGiver [email protected]
