    1. Re: [ILFULTON] Family Cemeteries
    2. Hi Tina, I don't have info about a family cemetery in Fulton, but I do know there must be millions of them missing out there. I was listening to an old cassette tape recording of two of my Great Aunts in Iowa from around 1975. They were retelling family stories, and described an old family plot that was on the land her Grandparents bought in 1880. They kept the stones intact, and farmed around it. But in the 1920's, when they sold the land, the new owners plowed right on through the little cemetery. Today there is no sign of it. I heard a similar story when I was living in Texas. While researching in the library, a young man approached the genealogy expert who was sitting near me. He said they were clearing brush from their ranch, when they noticed a number of large rocks under a fairly large growth of brush. He then realized they were tombstones, and they had all been pushed together in a heap years ago. Obviously they were no longer on the graves they were supposed to identify. This young man wanted to find out where the plots might be. Luckily, the researcher already knew what cemetery it probably was, and was able to find more information. But stories like these leave a pit in my stomach, as I have not been able to find any sign of my WILLIAMS family of Illinois 1840 Nauvoo - supposedly buried on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. Nor can I find the resting place of my GGrandmother: Etta "May" INGRAM LONGWELL WAGGONER, (b 1879) who supposedly lived in Fulton, IL (town of Vermont) as late as 1945. My search just reached the 10th year -- I don't think I'll ever find them. Most of us have one or two ancestors missing from our trees and wonder where they might be buried. It occurred to me that so many folks owned their own land back then maybe they were buried out under their favorite shade tree. As a kid growing up in Fulton Co. I remember seeing an old family cemetery not far from our place. The families name was KRAFT. (there may have been 8 burials) They had at least 3 children that died one right after another. I remember thinking how sad it must have been for them to have lost their children so close together and they were all so young . That family cemetery unfortunately was destroyed about 20 years ago, maybe longer by the owner of the land. As far as I know this cemetery wasn't recorded by the FCH&GS. It would be interesting to know if others on this list know of similar family cemeteries in the Fulton Co. area. Hindsight is always 20/20, I sure wish now that I had wrote down the information about the KRAFT family. Better yet, it would have been nice if the owner of the land had enough respect and let the KRAFT family Rest In Peace. 2. OOPS! I made a mistake. My WAGGONER line is an early Illinois line of Hancock county, but my GGrandmother (Etta May Ingram Longwell) married a "C H WAGNER" from Warren Co.... I got my "WAGS" mixed up! It should read: But stories like these leave a pit in my stomach, as I have not been able to find any sign of my WILLIAMS family of Illinois 1840 Nauvoo - supposedly buried on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi. I hope more are saved before it's too late.
