To ginny S.---------There were a lot of Reeds. Emma was my grandmother; parents John and Naomi. If any interest let me know. (We are going to Fulton County next week for a couple of days)
I am looking for anyone doing research on the Londry,Cramlet or Totten families. Henry S. Totten is my 3rd great grandfather and he was married to Elizabeth Londry. They had Theodore, John and Margaret Totten. It is my belief that there may be more children but as of yet I have not been able to prove this. I can find them in 1850 and 1870 in Fulton County but I have not been able to locate them in 1860. In the 1870 Census Henry was a Widower and living with Catherine and Sarah Totten....it is my guess that they are his aunts. He has with him the youngest two children. In 1880 Henry was in Missouri. Henry died in Fulton County April 4,1897. I do not have a lot of information on his wife Elizabeth and would love to find someone that is doing reseaching on both of these families. --------------------------------- Love cheap thrills? There seems to be a lot of interest in the Smith ancestry. I am looking for the following line. Any help would be appreciated: Charles Geiger Smith B. 2-11-1822 in Tennessee married Lydia Belle Lindsay in Morgan Co., IL in 1846 . They had 14 children--one of which was Jess William Smith B. May 26, 1871 in Missouri. One is his children was James Louis Smith b. 1-4-1899 which was my grandfather. Any help with this line would be appreciated. Some thoughts on document storage and sharing. Make several copies of original documents by photocopy and or scanning, then store the original [properly, whatever you determine that to be] and only use the copies. This sounds basic but a lot of people make a new copy of the original each time there is a call for it -- which results in a lot of unnecessary handling of often fragile documents. When scanning a copy save the file to .tif. You can open and reproduce it many times without harm. But a file saved as .jpg, while great to email, deteriorates every time it is opened. So keep a .tif of the original for long term storage purposes. Obviously, the attic and the basement are not good storage places. For original irreplacable documents I use the bank vault. I live in hurricane country and I can't think of a better place. Unfortunately, many of them are stored in a bank in tornado country. I don't know if the bank vault can withstand a tornado or not but we haven't come up with a better place. Otherwise, quite frankly, I don't worry about them. The birth/marriage/death certificate, will or whatever you got from the County Clerk is a copy to begin with. I keep a copy of every vital record in digitalized form and share copies with all interested people. I sent copies of all of mine to the local G&H. That way I increase the chances a copy will always be available. Periodically I burn my entire genealogy files collection to CDs, put a copy in my bank vault and send another copy to my cousin to do the same. At home I have a backup copy on two different computers. Again, I am trying hard to make sure it is not lost. It really doesn't pay to keep your genealogy files to yourself. Cheryl Rothwell

Fulton County Clerk 100 North Main Lewistown, IL 61542-1409 Telephone: (309) 547-3041 I can think of no reason they have to be certified AND that is not true in other counties. It isn't the state doing it. Depending on what year the record is for it could easily be cheaper to get it from IRAD [$1]. Illinois Regional Archives Depositories (IRAD) hold original marriage records or microfilm copies for many Illinois counties. The IRAD holdings include marriage records for over seventy of the 102 counties in Illinois. Consult the Local Governmental Records Holdings Database to see if IRAD has marriage records for the county and date of the marriage you are requesting. Type the search term MARRIAGE in the title field to return all marriage records in the IRAD holdings. If IRAD does have marriage records for the county you are searching and for the pertinent time period, write the appropriate IRAD depository and include in your letter all of the information on the marriage given in the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index. Marriage record searches are free, but a small copy fee will be billed for records found. IRAD provides uncertified copies only. Certified copies must be requested from the county clerk. I checked the list on Fulton and did not see marriage records but plenty of other stuff there. Go here: http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/GenealogyMWeb/iradsrch.html Enter ONLY Fulton and Western Illinois University as the depository. You might find something useful. Cheryl Rothwell
My understanding is that the State of IL sets a maximum that a county MAY charge. Each county then sets its own policy and pricing within those parameters. All counties in IL do not charge $11 for a copy of a marriage certificate or require that they be certified. The State does set the fees for copies of records that are kept in the Clerk of the Circuit Court offices. I visited several counties in IL last summer and paid a different price for marriage and death records in each one. LouAnn in NC
