    1. 1880 census
    2. Hi--Can someone on the list tell me if there is an indexed version of the Fulton 1880 census? I have a couple who were married in 1879 in Lewistown, but do not show up in the Soundex of 1880 because they had no children yet. I am sure they were there, and ought to be in the census, but need an index. Any help here? I have William W THOMAS and wife Mary M Jones THOMAS. Wm was born in Bristol, England in 1857, Mary in Wales in 1858. Also looking for Wm's parents who may have lived there too. Amos Henry THOMAS and Rachael Elizabeth Prosser THOMAS. I have "heard" that Amos was dead by 1880, so his wife may be listed as head of household. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Debbie in California Abudebbie@aol.com

    1. Robert Leroy Cleer
    2. Does anyone out there have any connection to a Robert Leroy Cleer of Fulton County? He was born in PA in Dec of 1865, and was married at least twice. His second wife was Ada (White?). The 1900 census lists Mary & Ida from the first marriage, and Eliza from the 2nd. In 1910 they also had Grace Irene Cleer on 4-22-1902 in Fulton County. I would love to have any further information. Thanks. Govmarley@aol.com

There was a son and grandson who lived there with her name was John and Robert and this would have been somewhere between 1932 and 1940. If anyone has any info would appreciate it on all of them. They lived at one time at 836 s 1st st. Thank you Mary craftpad@aol.com

    1. Squire Peters
    2. I am searching for any evidence of the Squire Peters family of Fulton County. Here is the (very) little information I have: James Levi Peters, born June of 1881 in Fulton County, parents were possibly named Levi Miller and Susan Peters. Supposedly Susan died when Jimmy was 7 or 8 and his grandparents took him in (Squire Peters & wife) and changed his last name to Peters. I did find James Peters listed on the 1900 census of Fulton County enumerated with his uncle and aunt, John J. Fast and Eliza (I am assuming her maiden name was Peters) along with the Fast children: Eliza, Esty, and Ollie. Let me know if you have any information. Thanks. Michelle govmarley@aol.com

    3. An Added note from Ginny, i don't belong to any of the IL genealogical groups, and don't have a problem getting anything. i usually join though, ; to help finances and i ALWAYS try to take little goodies along, to give to the nice helpers, 'cause they were nice; and to give to the ones who aren't so nice, 'cause maybe they'll be nicer to the next researcher. Never have a problem,... tho' if we all remember that workers are sometimes overwrought from stresses of deadlines, people like us coming in and expecting to much, having unclear dates and wrong spellings<G> etc. *I believe there is still train service to Galesburg, too. Nice drive, either way. All my Dad's family are in McDonough Co. so thanks for the warning. ginny _______________________________________ Julie wrote: >Judy > >I'll second the the info about the people in Lewiston being very nice. > >may be on line. 1. The great people IN Fulton County
    2. VIRGINIA
    3. Judy, you'll find some of the very nicest and helpful people in the world. i spent a full day in the courthouse recently, they laugh, they smile and they can cry w/you when you find a sad bit of info. It's also a beautiful little town-Lewiston-Court House and town square. We had a lovely time as well as a potful of genealogy!!!! I went to Greenwood Cem. after the courthouse, in the dark, and found many acres--my hb. was muttering about 'food-too dark to see-hungry-thirsty--'. but i dept driving. Turned a corner in that vast cem. and there was the stone of my Great Grandma's son, by a first marriage, James (lamb) REED, his wf. Margaret Mitchell Reed, next to him. The Cem is HUGE, so be prepared. i had been chasing this little Lamb from birth in Allegany Co. MD, 1854, to wherever. The records are so complete, lots of Cem. books, that i found his funeral, his move to Allamakee Co. IA.(what the heck was he doing there??) and the informants on his death record, which led me to another 50 relatives.!!! You might want to make sure someone is avail. at the Cem., altho' the books have a code for burial sites(it was to dark for me to see)>:) Great places to eat, real food!, and some nice old buildings. >From this, you can gather, it was a hilight of my week out "on the road". Low priced motels, clean, friendly people. You will also find some towns w/old Scots names--Dunfermline--mining communities where my kins dug coal. Drive around, it's rich in history and heritage. I did not get ot the newspaper office or the genealogy centre--that's for next month. I've mean meaning to send this post to Fulton-List for some time, and now you just gave me a reason--to ans. your quest. i want to thank all those great folks, who not only tolerated me but helped out-- Tremendously. 1. Newspaper availability; research IN Fulton County
    2. JudyWhite1
    3. Perhaps someone can help me. Like everyone, I love going to old newspapers to confirm marriage and death dates and, when lucky, getting an obituary. I'm very interested in three men, brothers I think, who lived in Fulton County from about 1840 until their deaths. All three are buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Canton. They are: John WALLING , d 2 Jan 1878 Lewis WALLING, d 1880 Peter WALLING, d 19 March 1885. With 2 exact dates of death, I had pretty good hopes of finding newspaper accounts. Plus, I learned that Peter's obit appeared in the Fulton County Ledger in the issue of March 26, 1885. I have the April 1991 issue of Illinois Libraries, which lists the newspapers in the Illinois State Historical Library, as of that time. Unfortunately, I could not find in it any newspaper issues listed for the period(s) I need. Does anyone know if there's another location (perhaps in Fulton County??) where I might be able to get Fulton County newspapers around the above dates? Also, if there are folks on the list who live in Fulton County, would someone mind letting others know whether/how a trip to Fulton County for research would be particularly useful. Are there records there that we really can't find anyplace else? (like newspapers perhaps?) I just returned from spending a few days at the "big" library in Salt Lake City. While I was thrilled to find there the wonderful books on Cemetery Inscriptions of Fulton County and the books of funeral home records, I didn't find land records or probate records on film there. If you made a trip to Fulton County, what would you find????

    1. Re: Newspaper availability; research IN Fulton County
    2. Judy I'll second the the info about the people in Lewiston being very nice. As for newspapers. You might want to check the holdings of the Western Illinois Univesersity (or some name like that) in Macomb, IL. My cousin took me over there for a day and I found a lot of obits. THier libtaty catolog may be on line. Dont know how you plan on geting to fulton county but if you train it the closest depot is Macomb. By the way, IL has a state law that said you have to belong to a IL genealogy society for access to some records. I beonged to both IL Stste and fulton county at that tme. But if you ate going in person you might want to join ahead of time. The only people that asked were in McDounough County, but my cousin was a fairly well known researcher. Julia

    3. Can someone familiar with the 1870's geography of Banner Twp. tell me where the towns of Monterey and Utica were? It would be great to get a copy of Banner Twp. from the 1871 Atlas. What cemeteries are located in the vicinity of these towns? I'm looking for the KENNEDY family who married RUPE, MORRIS, MATHIAS, WILLIAMS, NEFF, and SHRINER. Thanks, Fultonites. Jim

    2. JudyWhite1
    3. I'd love to exchange information -- and especially to receive new information -- about any of the WALLING family who were in Fulton county IL during the 19th century. As far as I can tell, there were two separate groupings of WALLINGs. (1) Family of Gabriel WALLING -- I've found references to Gabriel in histories of Fulton County. Gabriel & his family were there by 1830, but he didn't stay long. By 1840 Gabriel had gone on to Iowa. Gabriel had children: Jerome, Ebenezer, John R., Jesse, George Washington, Amy, Phebe, & Albert G. At the time of the 1850 census, son John R. & Ebenezer's widow Caroline Collins Walling were still in Fulton County. (2) However, the extended family in which I'm most interested is that of three brothers who came to Fulton County from Ashtabula County OH. The brothers were actually born in NJ and/or NY. They are described below. a) Lewis WALLING b c1798, m1 Cynthia PIERCE in OH, m2 Mary Jane GRIM COOK in IL; d 1880 in Fulton County. Lewis's children: Edward (Edwin?) b 1831 OH; Martha b 1836 IL; Eli b 1839 IL, d Civil War Bryant & Lewis who d as infants in IL; Peter b 1845 IL, m Clarinda NUTTER b) John WALLING b c1802, m Auralina MITCHELL; d 1878 in Fulton County John's children: Austin b 1832, m Mariam WARD; Ellen b 1833 OH; Mary b 1837 IL, m Thomas EDGAR Elizabeth Ann m David W. SNYDER; Adelaide b 1843 IL m Goran CHAPIN John Marion b 1847 IL m Mrs. Emma Belle _____ PHILLIPS Emma b 1850 IL m Joshua BELT; Garshalaur b 1852 d infant c) Peter WALLING b c1807 m ___?____, c 1885 Fulton County. Apparently Peter had at least 1 child: Huldah b 1828 OH, m Thomas SNYDER, d 1863 Fulton County

    3. I am new to the list and apologise in advance if this request is inappropriate I am looking for help in tracing my great grandfather William LEYSHON who emigrated to the United States from the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, UK between 1881-91. He was followed in 1910 by his two grandsons - Alfred Herbert LEYSHON and John(Jack) HERBERT,( who may also have used the name Leyshon.) They settled in Cuba, Fulton County, Illinois and it is possible that they joined their grandfather in that area. These are the only facts that I have. Would it be possible to obtain any further information on any of them? Many thanks Shirley Askins Cardiff UK

    3. HI Debbie I have done some research on all of the cemeteries in fulton co and have found none by the name of Deming, and to my knowledge there is no W. Franfort or Deming in Fulton Co. Someone correct me if I am wrong. But in checking the USGS mapping site I did find a Denning cemetery just west of W. Frankfort Illinois in Franklin County. Could this be what you are looking for? 1. SHAW surname in Fulton County
    2. Ronald Frantz
    3. I am looking for information on my great grandmother, Ellen Shaw b. after 1850. Her father's name was Peter Shaw. She married Robert Ri(t)chardson and they are the parents of my maternal grandmother, Hazel Caroline Richardson Stephens. Hazel was born in or around Breeds. I don't have any documented info on them, only some family anecdotes. Peter Shaw reportedly committed suicide. Ellen was evidently referred to as "Priscilla" for some reason. She also had a half brother named Lou Parker. Ellen and Robert both died relatively young and my grandmother and her siblings were raised by other family members. I am in the process of contacting the Fulton and Knox County records for whatever info they may have. (Ellen was living in Abingdon at some point and I believe that is where Robert may be from.) Any connection or direction on the Shaw connection would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Patrice Stegall Frantz
