    1. Another Fulton Co Bio
    2. Taken from the 1891 "Biographical History of Pottawattamie Co, Iowa" - Page 577: CHARLES S. PRICE, proprietor of the Pleasant Ridge stock farm, Macedonia Township, was born in Pennsylvania 1850, son of MARTIN and MELINDA (WILLIAMS) PRICE, Virginians. Charles was 3 years old when his parents ettled in FULTON COUNTY, ILLINOIS, and was 7 years of age when his mother died. A short time afterward, he began to support himself and engaged in farm work until grown. In 1870 he came to Pottawattamie County and worked by the month, saving up money until in 1877 he was able to buy some land. Mr Price is a pioneer in the introduction of Percheron horses in that part of the county and has spent much time and money to obtain the best specimens to be found. Mr Price married in 1875 to Miss MARION PERKS, daughter of James Perks, an old settler of Macedonia Township; their children are: Arthur Leon, James Martin, Edith May, and Roy. END (Page 568) GEORGE W. HAMILTON, an ex-soldier of the late War, was born in FULTON CO, IL, on Feb 6, 1846, a son of JOHN and BARBARA HAMILTON, the former a native of Ohio and the latter of Pennsylvania, the daughter of Jacob Rist. The parents emigrated to Wisconsin and resided for a time, in which State the father died when George was a babe, leaving a widow and one child, our subject. The mother died when George was 12 years old and he was reared by his grandfather, JACOB RIST, on a farm in Fulton Co, Illinois. George enlisted on August 9, 1862, at Princeville, Peoria Co, IL, in the 86th Illinois Infantry, Volunteer Co. K, under Colonel Irons. George was wounded at the great charge at Resaca, where he was wounded June 30, 1864, in the head. His skull was cracked and shattered in several places, and the officials thought he was mortally wounded. He was in hospital and eventually was discharged June 27, 1865 and returned to Fulton Co, where he resided one year. He then went to McDonough County, and then to Henderson Co, where he lived 15 years, engaged in farming. He came to Iowa in 1882. George married in Fulton Co, IL, in 1866 to MARY OVERMAN, a daughter of Charles and Eveline (Montgomery) Overman. By this marriage there were four children, only one now living: Anna. Mrs Hamilton died July 1884, and Mr Hamilton married again in 1888 to Mrs. MARY (TAYLOR) HECKER. She was a daughter of JAMES A. TAYLOR. END If anyone wants more detail or the entire bio, please e-mail me directly. REgards, Mona Sarratt Knight

    3. I'm trying to figure out a time frame for a picture I received from my Grandmother many years ago. No one knows who the subjects are but they must be family...Although I had several lines of my family in Illinois in the mid 1800's to early 1900's, I haven't any idea which was in Vermont, Fulton County, Illinois... The studio is "J.W. Van Syckel, Photographer, Vermont, Illinois"... Perhaps someone would know when this photographer was in business?? A scan of the photo is at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bgilson/temp/pu_66.jpg I would appreciate any advice that can be given :) Best regards, Bonnie -- Bonnie (Gallagher) Gilson, Phoenix, AZ mailto:bgilson@home.com http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~bgilson/ RootsWeb Donor

    1. college in Canton in 1895?
    2. Bonnie M. Gilson
    3. Hello, I have about a dozen photos from a studio called "Moran & Tucker" in Canton, Illinois. They're dated 1895 and all appear to be college aged people...some have names on the reverse, some don't. The ones that do: Phebe Shreffler Miss Emerine Frank Miller Ed Crawford Ross Beghtal Carl Landar These photos came to me through my father, who got them from his mother. She was born in 1908 so I think they originated from either her father or her mother... Her parents were James Edward Izatt, born Bloomington, IL (1872-1944) and Florence Johnston, born Warrens, WI (1876-1944). I don't know that either were ever in Canton but I'm thinking one or the other (or both) may have went to college there and these pictures may have been their friends. All of the photos will be available on my web site in a week or so...I'm redesigning :) Does anyone know if there was a college in Canton in 1895...If so, what was it called and any ideas if their records are still available??? The three brothers were John, Peter, and Lewis Walling. All three died in the period 1878-1885; they were all born between 1798 and 1807. They were all born in NY or NJ. I think the family's migration pattern was this: Sussex County NJ until about 1800 -- then someplace in NY until about 1815 or so -- then to Ashtabula County Ohio until about 1837. Then about 1837 the parents and one brother (Joel) went to Franklin County OH, the 3 brothers went to Fulton County IL, and my Abram went to KY where he ended up going to medical school before he moved to MO in 1840. I am completely obsessed with research on the Walling family. After 10 years of diligent looking, = I found what I think are Abram's parents -- and actually, I didn't find them -- a fellow researcher did. The researcher and I had been in contact previously, decided our families weren't the same. Turns out the brother Joel Walling is her ancestor. She found land records in Ashtabula County Ohio that pretty well imply that there are these five brothers; I think I know another one, a Croel Walling). So that gave us the parents John & Hulda Walling. But I don't know Huldah's maiden name or the parents of either John or Huldah. I'm hoping to find some clues in Fulton County as to the background of the three brothers who went there. I'm enjoying my retirement of 8 months now. The months are just flying by= . I had a lot of qualms about retiring. I was an analyst for the Alaska Public Utilities Commission for 20 years. It was an interesting, but pretty stressful job. I thought I'd miss the work. I haven't missed it for even 5 minutes. I had great friends from work but I still see them occasionally. I think you'll really like retirement. I know some people are bored, but = I haven't been even for a minute. I feel like I finally have time to do the things I've always wanted to do. To tell the truth my only problem is tha= t I feel a little guilty having so much fun all the time -- this is the firs= t time since I was five years old that I haven't had the full responsibilities of school, children, work, or all three. What names in Fulton County are you researching?? Our children are grown and gone also. My son, Tom, is in the US Navy for 15 years and is currently stationed at San Diego. He is an Air Traffic Controller and will retire in five years at the same time I do. I am a UPS driver and have 20 years in. I love my job and the people that I meet. I have made great friends. I will miss all of that when I retire, but my husband and I purchased 4 acres of ground in Colorado several years ago with the idea of retireing there. Our daughter, Tara, and her son Justin live in a suburb of Denver so we will be close to them. We make several trips west each year. Vicki < --part1_918131329_boundary-- --part0_918131329_boundary--

    1. Research IN Fulton County
    2. JudyWhite1
    3. I want to thank everyone who responded to my query about doing research IN Fulton County. I received lots of good advice and have tried to look at all the web sites that were recommended to me. Fulton County sounds as if it's a beautiful, friendly place with good libraries, especially in Canton. I do have four more specific questions that I don't think were covered in the replies I received. (1) Are there probate records available separate from wills? (For example, estate records for those who died intestate) I've seen the book listing early wills for Fulton County. Unfortunately, the folks I'm looking for weren't listed in that book; but I know that they had property so I wonder if there might be other probate records. (2) Are there land records that are available? (3) Does anyone know what the dues are to join the Fulton County Genealogical Society? (4) Could someone explain the IRAD. I tried and tried this p.m. to research this on the web and found what seemed to be a hundred links that didn't work. One person suggested that traffic quadruples during the Spoon River Drive. >From what I read on the web, that event apparently occurs during the first two weeks of October. Am I correct about that? I really am thinking about a spring trip to Fulton County. And if you watched the NBC news tonight you can tell why it might be particularly appealing to me right now. Judy White Chugiak, Alaska
