The past 2 years has been a most memorable experience for me & I have each of you to thank for that time. It has become necessary for me to unsub to the lists to which I belong for family reasons. You have helped me through some pretty tough times & you have shared some joyous events. For this I thank each of you. If there is a way, in the future, that I can return I will try to do that. That does not appear to be feasible in the near future but Heavenly Father works in wonderous ways. May to good Lord watch between thee & me, until we meet again... Bonnie F. (no address)
HI Jean There is a write-up in "A History of Fulton County Illinois in Spoon River Country 1818-1968" about this Geo. Duncan as follows: George Duncan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1787. He was educated to be a physician in Glasgow, but gave up his profession, coming to America in 1816. He first located in Pennsylvania and while there helped to survey for the Erie canal. In 1835, he went to Shawneetown, Ill, but soon moved to the beautiful and picturesque spot on Spoon River, now known as Duncan Mills. At this spot there were rapids in the river suggesting to him the erection of a dam and flour mill. Thus came into being the famious Duncan Mills, completed in all probablility in 1836. The mill became famous for miles around, as this was a sawmill with burrs for grinding wheat into flour. The grist mill was built soon afterwards. One of the remarkable things was that the mill ran through winter's ice and summer's drought and only a great flood could make it be silent. Mr. Duncan had able assistants in his sons, John and Thomas, and his bachelor brother, Henry. There is more written on him, but I hope that this tidbit will help you to identify is this is your George. I would be happy to send you copies of the write-up if this turns out to be your line. Hope this helps...........Bev

Hi--Does anyone here know about a family of JONES that I thought were living in LaSalle CO in 1880? I see their daughter getting married in Lewistown in 1879. but looking on the map it seems a bit far afield from LaSalle. Would there be some reason for the family to go to Lewistown that could explain this? Someone suggested that the Masonic Hall may have been there? I do know that they had some connection to Canton because they have many photos taken by photographers there. Much later, one of the Jones girls was married to an EVANS and resided in Canton. I've just returned to Phoenix from a midwest vacation and stopped one entire day at the Canton Public Library. They have a terrific (and growing) genealogy section, and I met several nice gentlemen there who volunteered to help me find information. They have marriage, death, obits, cemetary records, census records, etc. for Fulton Co and surrounding counties. It was wonderful and I was able to find a lot of information about my MAGERS and PATTERSON surnames. Now, my question: Does anyone have a connection to a McCURDY surname in Fulton Co? One of my Patterson lines (Sarah E.) married an Albert McCurdy, but I can't quite make a more definitive connection. Any help is appreciated. Mona Sarratt Knight
