Maybe someone can check the actual census for you to see where these men were born and who is listed with them. Evan
Hi, Perhaps this will help you some. It's quoted from A History of Fulton County, Illinois in Spoon River Country: 1818-1968, Fulton County Board of Supervisors, 1968, p. 112. "A man by the name of Smith supposedly founded the town, we are told, but this was not the case. The church, a school, and a blacksmith shop preceded him by 30 years. These gave the railroad a target, and Smith an opportunity to sell lots. Smith went on to Oklahoma when the railroad came in 1868, but his name has remained." I bet you'll find his given name in Fulton County deed records. My mother was born in Smithfield, and I'd certainly like to see the town someday. I research the following Fulton surnames: Chenoweth, Smith, Beaird, Drummond, Langston, Hasty. I have researched the early Mennonite settlers in Fulton Co. They were very few and far between. My ancestor John Schenk was fromVirginia -- as probably were the Boyer and Hartman family name. Other names in the article 'Early Mennonites in Fulton Co." from the "Mennonite Heritage" are Baughman, Rohrer, Engle, and others. A Daniel and Katherine Kennel Keim arrived from Washington Co. (PA) in 1848 according to the article. Apparently there never was an organized Mennonite church in the Co. Jan Van Doren
Hi, Searching for the Death Date of my greatgrandmother Almira Lembeck Rose (b 1827). She was the wife of George A. Rose (1819-1893). They are buried in the Old Cemetery, Fulton Co. Cemetery in Union Twship. Thanking you in advance for any help that might be given. Gail McMullin gdjslm@aol.com
Jacob Brown lived prior to 1840 in Crawford Co., PA. Information included in his father's probate file stated that Jacob was residing in Fulton Co., IL in the year 1848, and that he had moved to Fulton Co. about 10 years previous to that time. Can someone check the 1850 census to see if Jacob Brown is listed. I would like to find the names of his wife and children. And, if they died in Fulton Co. Also, are there books available for census, cemeteries, marriages, etc for this county? Thank you in advance, Bertha
Hi All, I am new to this list, which seems like a real good one! I would love to begin sharing research with all of you. Many of my ancestors lived in Fulton Co. in the mid-1800's, with the surnames: HAGEMAN, JOHNSON, WALLICK, STRYKER, and the allied family SKILLMAN. My 2GG William Brown HAGEMAN and my 2GG his 2nd wife Magdalena Voorhees STRYKER (widow of Randall SKILLMAN) lived in Fairview, Fulton Co. His and many other families moved in covered wagons to the rich farmlands of Seward Co. Nebraska, around 1866. His father, Isaac HAGEMAN, had immigrated from Somerset Co., New Jersey with his 2nd wife Ellen VOORHEES around 1837 with many other (Dutch) Somerset families. William Brown HAGEMAN's son Simon Peter HAGEMAN, my GG, was born 21 Sept 1858 in Fairview. William Brown's other HAGEMAN children with Magdalena, born in Fulton Co. were: Helen V., Christopher Stryker, and William. They moved to Seward Co., Nebraska. With his first wife who had left him a widower, Aulche Quick STRYKER (died 19 Jan 1850, Illinois), sister of Magdalena Voorhees STRYKER, William Brown HAGEMAN had several other HAGEMAN children, most of whom were born in Fulton Co.: Maria, John Stryker, Garrett Van Derveer, Jane Ann, Abraham Wilson (married Henrietta F. KIRKHUFF in Jan 1865, Fairview, Fulton Co.), Jane Adaline (married William Augustus BROKAW, he was b. 12 Jun 1842, Fulton Co.) Another 2GG, Abraham WALLICK (born in Indiana about 1819) married in Fulton Co. my 2GG Mary H. JOHNSON, who was born in Fulton Co. 3 Jan 1835 (Mary was a descendant through her mother Zerilda WILCOXSON of Daniel Boone's sister Sarah). They also moved to Seward Co., Nebraska. The WALLICK children, born in Illinois, including 2 sets of twins, were: Martha Viola (my GG), Elizabeth, John Franklin, Christian J., Sarah Ellen, Wallace, Mary Louisa, Moses, Elijah, Henry, Jane, Addie (she stayed in Illinois, married a SMITH, and had daughters Ruth and Clara), and Melville. Mary's father, Moses C. JOHNSON, born in Vermont (his background is still a mystery to me), was 43 and a farmer in Fulton Co. during the 1850 census. His and Zerilda's other JOHNSON children, born in the 1830's and 1840's in Fulton Co., were: Charlotte, Louisa, Elijah W., Moses Melville, Deborah A., Zerilda, America, and Orean E. America JOHNSON married Thomas David SKILLMAN, son of the aforementioned Randall SKILLMAN and Magdalena Voorhees STRYKER in 1864 in Fulton Co. The following is from: Nebraska: the Land and the People: Volume 2 (pages 521-522) "Thomas David Skillman, one of Nebraska's territorial pioneers, son of Randall Skillman and Magdelene Vorhees, was born in Somerset County, near Trenton, New Jersey, on November 1, 1843. "His father died in 1849 and two years later his mother was remarried to William Hageman and the family moved to Fulton County, Illinois. "At the age of about twelve years Thomas was 'farmed out' to a man by the name of DAVIS for his clothes and keep and $12.50 per year. Later this was raised to $25 per year. In the winter months he and Mr. DAVIS did considerable work in a coal drift, hauling much of the coal to Peoria on bob sleds. He always spoke very kindly of Mr. and Mrs. DAVIS. "In 1861 he presented himself for enlistment in the Union army and was turned down, being told that by the examining physician that he had only one lung and the other was nearly gone, and that he could not possible live more than a year. "In 1864 he married Miss America Johnson. In the early spring of 1865 this young couple, together with a younger brother, Abraham V. SKILLMAN and three other young couples, Mr. and Mrs. John ROBERTS, Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Richard SAMPSON and Mr. and Mrs. John DURLAND, left by wagon train for the territory of Nebraska. At this time there was only one log cabin at present site of the City of Lincoln. "In the spring of 1866, Mrs. Skillman's brother, an ordained United Brethren minister, Rev. E.[Elijah] W. JOHNSON and his wife arrived from Illinois..." I hope you found this enjoyable and/or useful. I have more information about these families to share, but I also still have many holes and questions. Best Wishes, Alice Imig Stipak San Jose, California
Hi, Rooters, I am trying to find the burial site of the man who Smithfield, IL (Fulton County), was named for....a Dr. Smith. I may have found him buried in Oklahoma, but the only way to know for sure is to verify his given name. Does anyone know it? Thanks for your help, Researching MILLER, MELVIN, HUKILL, OLIVER, MOORE, COONS, COOK, WAUGHTEL, SAUNDERS, among others...... Judith Goodwin "Obsessed; in a moderately, well-adjusted way"
I have been trying for some time to find any information about my two great uncles who settled in Cuba, Fulton County in the late 1800's. Their names are Alfred LEYSHON and James (Jack) HERBERT. Both were very involved with the Baptist Church in the Uk prior to leaving for America as Sunday School teachers, and leading Bible Study classes. Would anyone know of a Baptist Church in Cuba, and if so where their records may be archived, as I am sure their lifestyle would have been perpetuated in the US. Many thanks for any assistance Shirley Askins Cardiff UK
Morning all, Has anyone come across a person known as Amelia Swallow? 1850 Hunterdon County, NJ., residing with her parents, John and Lenah Swallow-age 20. 1870 Fulton County, IL. (Canton) residing with Wesley Gosnell -b. MD.-age 27 Wesleys wife, Eveline is b. NJ. John, age2-b.IL. Also in the home, Mary Lee-b. NJ.-age Maggie Swallow, b. NJ.-age 40 Jan
I am having trouble with tracking down parents of William N Miller b 8/24/1848 Staunton, VA d. 11/14/1927 Canton, IL m. Elizabeth (aka Eliza) Tyler 9/11/1870 According to the Prairie Farmers Reliable Directory reprinted from 1917, stated he became a resident of Fulton County in 1859, making him only 11 years old at the time, but cannot find any records pointing to his family. At 1917, the publication also states he owned 225 acres in Buckheart Township Section 17, residing at Rte. 6, Canton. The 1900 census stated that a Bert Porter listed as a farm helper and born 4/18/1879 resided with the couple and their children. The 1910 census stated that the farm was mortgaged per the census #9 Farm Schedule, and also that year he noted he had been married 37 years, meaning Eliza may not be the mother of the oldest child, James Almerian (aka J. Allie) Miller b. 9/18/1871 in Canton d. 12/24/1956 in Canton, IL.
Canton, IL (Fulton County) Trinity Lutheran Church founder: I have information that Emma Caroline (Erickson) Miller, wife of James Almerian Miller (better known as J. Allie Miller) may have been one of this church founders? Can anyone confirm this or send information as to how I may be able to obtain this confirmation? Thanks in advance.
My greatgrandfather, Franklin Easley (b. 1850), son of Isaac and Mary Norris Easley, was born in Fulton Co. and lived there until sometime in the 1880's. They were probably in the Vermont, possibly Ipava area. I just learned that he worked in a spoke factory. Is anyone familiar with spoke factories in that area during the time period of 1865 to 1885? I assume it had something to do with wagon wheels, as he made a wagon for a young relative. Franklin married Alice Marshall, daughter of William and Charlotte Loomis Marshall, in Seward Co., NE, in 1887. The Marshalls were formerly from the Vermont area. Other children were Florence and Ross (married Cathleen "Kate" Mercer). They may have been related to S.P. Marshall of Ipava, who died at the age of 60 in the 1880's or 90's. Any connections?
