    1. Truitt Family of Knox and Fulton Counties, Illinois
    2. Lee Hendricks ELN
    3. I'm brand new to this mailing list, and wonder if there are any Truitt descendants who subscribe to this list? I also belong to the mailing list for Knox County, Illinois, and posted the following message there last month. I would love to connect with anyone who may have access to the Truitt family research which was compiled by Mrs. Ada Reganos, a former member of the Fulton and Knox County Genealogical Societies. Would be happy to pay for copies of Mrs. Reganos research, if the work is on file somewhere with the Fulton County Genealogical Society. Thanks Sincerely, Lottie Hendricks Mesa, Arizona leehendricks@earthlink.net The following article was sent to me, Lottie Hendricks, via a FAX from the Galesburg Public Library; Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. The source was cited in the Ancestry.com site as follows: --"Jarman Truitt Record, Sussex Co., Delaware; Knox County Genealogical Society Quarterly; Volume 9, Issue 1; March 1981." The article appears on page 2. Lottie Hendricks has transcribed an exact copy of the article below. The name of the contributor was worn almost completely off in the original copy of the Quarterly, which is housed in the Galesburg Public Library. A volunteer "genie" identified the author of the article as a "Mrs. Ada Reganos." According to the "genie," Mrs. Reganos is now deceased. The article was entitled "Truitt Family." The Truitt Families of Knox and Fulton Counties, Illinois are descendants of Jarman Truitt of Sussex Co., Delaware. Jarman Truitt is listed in the Reconstructed 1790 census of Delaware as living in Broad Creek Hundred, Sussex Co. He died after the 8th of October, 1823, the date on which he signed his will. The will names the following children: Elijah, Littleton, Sarah Lewis, Nancy Littleton, William, and Jarman, and his son-in-law Nehemiah Jones. Rev. Elijah Truitt of Ross County, Ohio was a son of Jarman Truitt. He died in Concord Township, Ross County, Ohio on the 7th of May, 1853, aged 88 years, 2 months, and 9 days. He is said to have married (1st) Tabitha Jiles (or Giles) , daughter of William Jiles of Delaware. He married (2nd) Elizabeth Bowdle, daughter of Henry Bowdle, of Union Township, Ross County, Ohio. Both are buried in the Bowdle Graveyard, Union Township. (***SEE NOTE BELOW) Elijah Truitt was in Ohio by 1812 as he is listed in the 1812 Tax List of Ross County, Twin Township. Solomon Truitt, who may be his son, was married in Ross County in 1812. The Ohio Conference of the Methodist Church has very little information on the ministry of Rev. Elijah Truitt. He may have become what was called a "local preacher" and did not have a circuit or charge. He did, however, perform marriages in Ross County from 1819 until at least 1828. He is listed in the 1850 U.S. Census of Ohio in Union Township, Ross county; and his age is given as 77 and place of birth Delaware. Gilead Truitt, a son of Elijah and Tabitha, was born April 29, 1793 in Delaware. He married (1st) Nancy David on Jan. 12, 1828. After her death he was married to Angeline Bowen on Oct. 7, 1828 by his father, Rev. Elijah Truitt. Gilead Truitt served in the war of 1812 from Ohio under Capt. David Elliott and Col. John McDowell. He and Angeline were buried in the Lattaville Cemetery, Concord Township. A deed in the settlement of Gilead Truitt's estate in Ross County names the following heirs: Elijah Truitt and wife Eliza of Knox, Co., Ill.; Angeline Truitt; John Truitt and wife Phoebe Ann; William Truitt; John Wilkins and wife Jemima Wilkins; Nancy Rose; Sarah E. Truitt; and Dorothy A. Truitt. Elijah Truitt, son of Gilead and Nancy David Truitt, was born Oct. 14, 1817. He married Eliza Jane Taylor Nov. 4, 1841 in Ohio. They moved to Knox Co., Ill. about 1855 and located in Elba Township. He died July 2, 1898 at Yates City. Jemima Truitt, a daughter of Gilead and Angeline Bowen Truitt was born Aug. 1, 1834 and died March 4, 1904, Miltonville, Kansas. She married John Wilkins Feb. 24, 1853. A daughter, Sally Estelle Wilkins, married Joseph Ulm. They lived in Fulton Co., Ill., and were both buried in East Midway Cemetery, Young Hickory Township. 1. Wills, Wills and more Wills
    2. Hello, Well, I finally received the Wills from the Fulton County Circuit Court; and, just my luck, they are not my MILLERS. If they are yours I will gladly send them to you....No charge except postage; just proof of relationshiph. The first one is for Barnard MILLER, who lived in Lewistown, IL. He had no apparent heirs and died the 27 June, 1864. The next Will is for Henry W. MILLER, who died on 20 January, 1898. He owned land in Pleasant Twp, Fulton County. Some of his heirs were , (daughter), Daisey E. BUCKLES and J. W. Buckles. His wife, Mary MILLER died shortly after her husband's death. The third one is for Jacob B. MILLER of Lee Twp, whose wife was Amanda Jane Dobins. Jacob died in 1838. These Wills are complete, including receipts. His land came from John HOUSEHOLDER, a private in the War of 1812, and was asigned to Jacob MILLER of Morgan County in the state of VA. Also some land which had belonged to Rebecca ANDERSON, widow of John ANDERSON, who was also a private in the VA Volunteers War of 1812 and was sold to Jacob B> MILLER of Morgan County, VA. Evidently, Daniel L. MILLER was the only heir. Regards, Judith Goodwin

    3. I am trying to find any information on WELLS HICKMAN and MARY J. KING HICKMAN. They were married in Fulton County on February 12, 1866. They 'took in' and raised a baby boy named ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER who was born in Canton, Illinois on October 14, 1872. Unable to find any 'official' guardianship papers or birth records. I have checked at Fulton & McDonough Counties for these. WELLS and MARY J. HICKMAN moved to the Bushnell, Illinois area and that is where ALBERT MILLER was raised. Would like to find out if WELLS and MARY HICKMAN had any children of their own. WELLS HICKMAN b. d. 29 Dec 1922 at the age of 73 years BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C MARY J. HICKMAN b. d. 16 Nov 1933 in Walnut Grove, Illinois BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C in the same plot of the Bushnell Cemetery is : DAVID M. KING b. 1820 d. 28 Dec 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C NANCY KING b. 1830 d. 25 Feb 1905 BLK 10 LOT 3 SEC C I believe that DAVID and NANCY are MARY J. KING HICKMAN's parents but have not found any 'official' proof. ALBERT MITCHELL MILLER married a GERTRUE MAE HAYWORTH CAIN and raised a family in the Bushnell, Illinois area. ALBERT MILLER is my husband's grandfather & I am trying to find out who ALBERT's parents/grandparents were. ALBERT's daughter ( who is 80 years old ) said that all the information that she ever knew was that ALBERT's mother died when he was born and that his father was a Doctor and died a few years after he was born. ALBERT MILLER passed away on September 14, 1955 and is buried in the KING plot in the Bushnell Cemetery. I find this unusual in that he is laid to rest in the KING section. This would be the maiden name of the woman who raised ALBERT. I wonder if ALBERT was born to a sister of MARY J. KING HICKMAN ? I would certainly appreciate if anyone would have any possible leads for me to check out. Thanks ! Carolyn J. Miller millercw@netins.net

    1. Tales of the Thomsons
    2. I am looking for information on the THOMPSON families of Fulton County. My great grandfather Anthony THOMPSON was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, in 1813. His parents, Samuel and Elizabeth THOMPSON, died there when he was 16. In 1843, at age 30, Anthony and two brothers came out to the Illinois frontier country. Anthony settled in Woodland Township in South Fulton county. In 1844 he married 17-year-old Lucy Shields, daughter of Kinsey Shields. For five years they lived in a log cabin schoolhouse. By the time Anthony died in 1870 at age 57, he had accumulated a farm of 360 acres east of Summum. Anthony and Lucy raised four daughters and one son. The son was my grandfather Benjamin THOMPSON. Benjamin married Rachel McNeil, daughter of David McNeil of Astoria. Nine of their children grew to adulthood---Orville, Oscar, John, Lute, Will, Carl, Earl, Carrie, and Lucy. Benjamin had four sisters: Mary Elizabeth, Nancy, Sarah, Minerva Jane and Martha. Mary married Enoch Thompson, believed to be a cousin. Nancy married John Hagan. Sarah married William Smith, and Minerva Jane married William Harvey Shelley. Martha married Thornton Bourell. The links between Anthony and the two brothers who were said to have came to Illinois with him was lost through the generations. There were other Thompsons in Fulton County and surrounding counties, but my parents never identified them as related. It is quite possible that other descendants might be more knowledgeable about the other lines. I'm only confessing my own ignorance. During the summer of '98 I assembled everything I could find on the descendants of Anthony and Lucy Thompson into a family tree that totals over 500 names, counting spouses. Much of my information came from papers left to me by my mother, Lucy Thompson (daughter of Benjamin). I also had information from Harry Thompson and Marilyn Shelley. I have very little information on many of the later generations of most family lines, except for my own family and one or two others. For nearly 80 years many of the descendants of Anthony THOMPSON have gathered for the annual family reunion. In recent years the reunion has been held at Putnam Park near Cuba. Many descendants still live in central Illinois, but many of us have migrated to "other parts." I live in Salt Lake City, Utah. My parents were Charley and Lucy Blue. My mother was the youngest child of Benjamin THOMPSON. I was born and grew up on the family farm in Woodland Township. One of my cousins, a retired nurse, Nedra Thompson Ashin, lives in California. Nedra's son, Bob Ashin, is a lawyer there, handling legal matters related to shopping malls. During the summer, while he was in Chicago for a meeting, he met a Peggy Thompson. They found that both had roots in central Illinois. With further investigation, they determined they were related. Turns out that Peggy was descended from Anthony's brother, John THOMPSON. The descendants of John THOMPSON hold their reunion in Canton. Harry Thompson, president of the Anthony THOMPSON Reunion, attended their reunion and met David Thompson, Peggy's father, who lives near Carrolton, Illinois. Since then David has exchanged information with us about his ancestors. One of my retirement occupations has been to visit the Family History Library of the LDS (Mormon) church here in Salt Lake City. I'm lucky enough to live hardly ten minutes from this enormous repository of family history. I found a great deal of information in the Fulton County part of the Illinois section. Combined that with what I already had, and the material from David Thompson, here is what we've found. ************ John Thompson was 11 years older than Anthony. Married in Ohio, he and his wife Keziah (third wife) had eight children and lived on a 124-acre farm in south Woodland Township. An 1895 plat map of the township shows an F. M. Thompson property. Francis Marion was one of his sons and probably inherited it from his father. The Watson School is on the west edge. John and Keziah Thompson are buried in the Morningstar Cemetery, not far from Anderson Lake. Interestingly, as a boy of 11 or 12, I recall visiting that cemetery. It was overgrown with trees and bushes, and many of the headstones were knocked down. Our youthful visit would have been in 1941 or '42. Through the efforts of David Thompson and others, I understand the cemetery is now being restored. In an 1879 history of Fulton County, I found short biographies of both John and Anthony. Though 12 years Anthony's senior, John outlived Anthony by 22 years. Four of their sons fought in the Civil War. David's grandfather was Francis Thompson. His father was Chester Thompson. They lived in Bluff City. His mother was Gladys Crable. One of his uncles, Hardy Thompson, lived in Astoria. Later on I found the third brother, Samuel. In the Fulton County Heritage history published by the Fulton County Historical and Genealogical Society, there is a story on the Kaler - Thompson Family, prepared by Ella Bolton of Canton. Her great grandfather was Samuel THOMPSON. According to her account, he settled in the Watson community in South Woodland, near his brother John. Samuel and Rosana Best THOMPSON had four children. One of them, George, was a blacksmith in Enion. George's daughter married Henry Kaler. The 1850 census lists an Elizabeth Thompson, age 22, living in John Thompson's household. She is too old to be their daughter. I wonder if she might be a sister who accompanied her brothers from Ohio? The histories say that John, Anthony, and Samuel are sons of Samuel and Elizabeth Asher THOMPSON. Samuel came from New Jersey and married Elizabeth in Maryland. John was born there in 1802. Anthony and Samuel were born in Coshocton County, Ohio. I've been searching for some trace of the family in Coshocton County, but so far have had no success. Another account In the Fulton County Heritage history, on the Thompson-Cox Family, says that Elizabeth Asher was born in England in 1809, died in 1890 and is buried at Farmington. However, it also says that her son Anthony was born in 1813, so she couldn't be his mother. If anyone has information on the Farmington Cemetery, I would appreciate verification that she is buried there. I have only summarized the information available on the family. I would take great pleasure in sharing information with anyone interested in the THOMPSON family history. I still need to do a great deal more research at the Family History Library. I am also trying to become more familiar with the genealogy resources available on the Internet, which of course is how I found this Fulton County site. It's a wonderful opportunity to link up with others who are researching Fulton County families. Herb Blue 1423 South 1000 East Salt Lake City, UT 84105 801-467-6460 herbblue@aol.com
