    1. [ILFULTON] Hinkle, Samuel R.
    2. Joan
    3. HINKLE, SAMUEL R. A much respected and retired farmer residing in Canton, but now deceased, he was born in Washington County, MD, on December 2, 1837, a son of Samuel and Anna (Rickard) Hinkle, natives of Franklin Co., PA, where the father was born in 1805, and the mother in 1803. On coming to Illinois they located in Joshua Twp., where the father followed farming. He died in January, 1877, and his wife passed away in 1879. The subject of this sketch came to Fulton Co., with his parents, having attended the district schools in his boyhood. He was reared on the farm, and on reaching maturity carried on farming until his retirement from active life. He built his recent home in Canton in 1903. On Feb. 21, 1860, Mr. Hinkle was married to Miss Minerva F. Randolph, who was born in Canton Twp. in 1837, and in girlhood received her mental training in the district schools in her neighborhook and at Galesburg, IL. After a singularly harmonious married ife of 47 years, Mrs. Hinkle was left alone by the death of her husband from heart trouble on March 20, 1907, after an attack of la grippe. They had no children but the children of other families were often made welcome and happy visitors in their home. Few men in Canton were more widely known than Mr. Hinkle and his passing away was deeply deplored by a large circle of friends. He was a Republican in political faith and held a number of positions including School Trustee for several years, Assistant Supervisor of Canton Twp., two terms, and Road Commissioner for twenty years. He was not a member of any church but was an earnest believer in the doctrines of Swedenborgian, or New Church, of which he was a liberal supporter and faithful attendant upon its services whenever held. 2. Anne Hayes
    3. Good morning Ms. Stipak, I have a general question where I haven't found any leads - maybe I'm not looking in the correct places. Around 1900-1915, did a group of Lithuanians (or Russians) immigrate to Fulton County, and settle in the vicinity of Farmington? Where may I find information about them in Fulton County? Thank you in advance, Anne Surnames = DOCHES/DOCKES and KAISER

They wouldn't necessarily have remembered from 10 yrs previous, what exactly the census taker needed to know. Just a thought about how that could have happened. Lyde

    1. [ILFULTON] 1880 census
    2. I finally found a Piatt family listed as Pian. Reading the letters is hard and of course those of us accustomed to the names can more easily decipher letters as we know who was living in the areas. Thus use some imagination if you can't find a name. This last one I found by looking and looking for the woman's name, approx. age, and place of birth. Jerilyn

    2. I think I want to add my two cents in about the 1880 census. My grandmothers were born in the 1800's. The style of handwriting then is not like it is today. Letters, especially capital letters, were entirely different. The "T" & "Y", and the "P"& "R" are easy to confuse. It probably best explains why my grandmother's surname appears as Yomas and not Thomas in the census. Pj

    3. Another Census Story: If you believe that your family should be listed in the census records (they are there in 1850, and 1870 but not 1860), then you should look over the census records carefully, because they very well may be there under another name. I had that problem in Douglas County, Illinois, having found my Boruff family in 1850 and 1870, but not 1860. In looking at each page carefully for 1860, I found them but their surname was listed as Brothers. Not that they couldn't have moved away and come back, but it is always better to check first where you know they were, and then, if you can't find them look at neighboring counties, states, etc.

    1. [ILFULTON] surnames misspelled in the census
    2. TINA REED
    3. Hi listers, I still consider myself a newbie searching for ancestors. I have made some mistakes along the way and hopefully have learned from them. Take for instance the census. This has been a great tool for me . But I have also discovered surnames are misspelled. Not only by the transcribers for the indexes but also by the census takers themselves.Of course most people already know this! Having a look at the actual census page itself may make all the differance in the world. The 1870 census for Fulton Co. Il. is indexed on line here at rootsweb. I have been for the longest time trying to figure out where my ZITTLE family disappeared to from 1860 -1870. The index for 1870 did not include any ZITTLE's from Fulton Co. I subscribe to Ancestry.com census and thought just for the heck of it I would have a look at the Deerfield twp. images just to make sure. Well ,to my surprise I found them. Their name was mispelled in the 1870 census ,instead of ZITTLE it was SITTLE and Cittle. How do I know it is the same family? Husband, wife and children all given names are the same as 1860 ,ages are added up the way they should be and the country of origin is the same. and 1880 there are no Sittle or Cittle families in Deerfield twp. it is back to being spelled ZITTLE. The Il. state wide marriage index also has a number of differant spellings for this surname. And this is only a thought, these folks came from Germany, they most likely spoke broken English. How did the name sound when it was spoken to the census taker? I guess I have learned another lesson in genealogy. Expect the unexpected and never assume anything. If by chance you have an opinion on this subject or this surname , I sure wouldn't mind hearing it. Thanks for listening! 2. Dawn ...
    3. Good evening Listers, I found that you can narrow down your search to first names with no last name at all in some rural areas of the 1880 census. I found my John Peterson Bergum going by John Peterson in that way! Heres to hoping they get even more available. Good luck to us all! Dawn DiSomma [email protected] Greetings Listers. Margaret has made a good clarifying point about the 1880 LDS census index transcription. That is all it is. An index transcription, but oh what a wonderful tool. I have found individuals living with other family members of different surnames using their site. Then, using the detail information given, I go to Ancestry.com and look up the actual page, print it and save it to my system so I have, not only a printed copy (documentation), but I also have the Mr. Sid copy on my system which allows me to zoom and pan the census document for deeper research. Even with being extra cautious about sources on the internet, this electronic searching is just too wonderful. 3. The LDS Family History Centers are a wonderful source of information. You can order microfilm or microfiche for $3.50 per roll. The film will remain available for one month, but can be retained longer for an additional fee. The libraries have viewers available for no charge. The volunteers are very helpful. You can even go online at www.familysearch.org and check their library for an extensive list of the films that are available. You can search by name, location, etc. I've added many names, dates, and data to my family tree by looking at microfilm of census records, marriage records, court records, soundex, land records, probate records, etc., etc., etc. Don't hesitate to stop by your local Church of Latter Day Saints and ask about their Family History Center. 3. I subscribe to the List in Digest format. . .so you all have probably discussed the 1860 census issue and moved on to other topics, but I thought I'd add my two-cents worth. Yes, there most certainly was an 1860 census for Fulton Co. Fulton Co. was formed in 1823 and there are census records available for all census years after that through 1930 (except, of course 1890). And, yes, the census images are available at various subscription sites on the Internet. 1860 Fulton Co. is indexed at Ancestry.com's census site. As Gloria mentioned, you can order the microfilm at your local public library (all libraries can order the microfilm; the reference librarian will have booklet explaining the process); it only costs a few dollars. Some libraries have a permanent collection of census microfilm, particularly for their county and state. And, if you live near an LDS Family History Center, you can also order the microfilm through them (the volunteers who staff the FHC libraries are very helpful and patient with newbies). A word of caution about the 1880 census transcription that is available at the LDS FamilySearch site. It is absolutely wonderful that this transcription is available. . . but do keep in mind that it is a transcription not the census itself. Once you find your folks on the 1880 transcription, you'll probably still want to look at the census images to double-check the transcriber's interpretation. Margaret
