Thank you Alice for allowing this to be posted. I think it should be of interest to any list connected to genealogy- - even though there is a political note to it. If Illinois state library were being closed, we would be screaming to the high heavens and soliciting help on every list that would listen. I personally have ties in Fulton Co and Washington state so I am very interested. Thank you for listening. Verne

This email is for Fulton County genealogy only. I have been in touch with the list administrator privately and she has agreed that the gravity of the situation warrants a one-time only posting. Due to the gravity of the budget deficit in Washington State, Governor Gary Locke wishes to close the State Library. In contrast the Republican Caucuses "only" want to close it to the general public. Their proposal will keep the library open for their research. The State Library possesses a variety of unique genealogical resources. Closure would hinder research in the Washington and the Pacific Northwest. If you wish to contact the Governor, any or all of the State Senators and Representatives or merely desire more information, please contact me directly off list. Jim Lawson [email protected]
The responses to my request have been overwhelming and I think that I have replied to every person who volunteered help. A lot of hours must have been taken up in transcribing and typing Census details . Many brick wall came tumbling down. I hope that my helpers will not mind if I mention especially Ruth Ann Ballard who was able to answer my specific request for information on the 1850 Census in Farmers Twp, Fulton County. It is a salutary lesson in not taking for granted the transcriptions of others. I had information that, on page 18 dwelling 18, there was a family of JAMES and ELIZABETH CARRISON, born England, and 9 children, born between 1828 and 1849 in IL. Many had tried to fit them into the Carrison tree, but I knew that it could not possibly be the emigrant James they thought it was!! Working from the England end, I knew that this family just did not "fit" anywhere. It turns out that page 18 is unclear and cannot be scanned easily. Ruth Ann was able to show conclusively that the family was in fact JAMES and ELIZABETH CAMRON, born KY, all the children details being correct. Searching the LDS site, 1880 national census and IL Statewide Marriage Index, I found the children marrying in and around Fulton County. It was indeed CAMRON or CAMERON. How "KY " had been mistaken for "England" is difficult to work out! Best Wishes to all Listers. Ron Kerrison in a wet and windy Yorkshire, North England.

The courthouse on the Fulton County homepage of the USGenWeb Project was destroyed by fire in 1894. The two front center pillars now stand in Oakhill Cemetery. They are called the Lincoln Pillars since Abraham Lincoln spoke standing between them in 1858 during campaigning for the presidency. The pillars can be seen by visiting the great Lewistown, IL website created by the talented and dedicated Fulton County historian Charlie Parkinson; AKA "Spoon River Charlie": http://cop42.tripod.com/ltown.html The current courthouse was built in 1897 & 1898. Visit Charlie's excellent website for considerable information on Lewiston and Fulton County ! ! You'll be glad you did. Be sure to visit all of the links. Max
It looks about the same as today. Well except for the trees. When I was last there, at the back door they had metal detector because court was in session and that was the only way you could enter the building. They also were restoring section. Hi Listers, Lyde has worked very hard to give us more MANY MORE abstracts of Fulton-related obits/death notices from the Glasford Gazette. We now have them for the years 1899-1909. I worked them in on the same page with the ones I posted earlier at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilfulton/newspapers/GlasfordGazetteObits.htm Now that page has nearly 5 times as many entries, for dozens of Fulton folk! I really love all of these Glasford obits; it must have taken Lyde scores of hours to accumulate, index card, and transcribe them! Accidental, murderous, and suicidal deaths are much more numerous than I would have guessed. Not to mention the various killer plagues. Wow, what a time to struggle to survive, and to keep your children alive. Thank you again, Lyde, for making heroic efforts to make our website a useful and joyous resource for all of us! Sincerely, Alice ILGenWeb Fulton County Coordinator and ILFulton List Admin

Last week there was a query on one of these lists about Charles Brokaw and Cornelius Ten Eyck. I believe that there was also a follow-up. I'm going to add my two cents worth. Last week while looking through census records for Fulton County I saw the name of Charles Brokaw, but dismissed it at the time. Today I went back and located Charles Brokaw in the 1850 Fulton County Census, Town of Joshua. He is listed with his wife Jane, a son William and a Jacob Ten Eyck. Based on the conversations of last week, I'm guessing that Jacob was a brother to Jane. Jim

Hi, Ron I don't have access to the 1860 Fulton County Census; however, I do have a CD of the 1860 Illinois Census Index. I find the following listings for people named Carrison in Illinois. I hope this might be helpful. Name: Carrison, Harriet Year: 1860 Gender: Age: County: FULTON CO. I couldn't find anyone named Able/Abel in Fulton County, although there were Ables in nearby Knox and McDonough Counties plus many more in other counties. Good luck with your research. In looking for obits be sure to check the classified. The Beacon News in Kane Co. Ill often put deaths in the classified section. Barb Smith
When I can't find the obit for someone in the old paper, I read the local news. Often a relative will have come to the furneral and it will tell how they were related and where they lived and date of funeral. I have added names to the tree this way. Joanne

Hi Listers, I just got my hands on a privately-published paperback book (1984, 117pp.) called "First 90 Years with 'Squeeze'"by Charles "Squeeze" WALKER -- anybody familiar with this little gem? It contains his fascinating and charming early memories of Fulton Co. (especially Smithfield, Seville, and Marietta), Peoria, Topeka, and many other places in Illinois and some in other states. He says he was 86 years old on 1/1/1978, so I take it he was born in about 1892. He mentions that his family home in Marietta was located at "Lincoln and Adams."Says they moved to Peoria from Fulton Co. when he was about 5, but he must have visited Fulton a lot after that judging from all the stories mentioning Canton, Fairview, etc. I have just begun to glance through this sweet little book, but wanted to alert you all to it, especially the WALKER researchers among you. Hope to compare notes with some of you, and to find a good way to share his wonderful memories with all of you. I definitely get the feeling that he would want you to hear his stories! Yours, Alice
Hi, Does anyone have a picture of Mary Ann (Strode) Pickering? She married Curtis J. Pickering in Fulton Co. Have Pictures of Curtis, would like one of his wife. Thanks Jen
