    1. [ILFULTON] Maid-Rite in Canton
    2. The Maid-Rite in Canton was owned and operated by the Lawrence family. I sent their son Tom a copy of this message and this is his reply: Lucille, thank you. I really appreciate your sending me this. I knew that the Maid-Rite had it's origin in Iowa. I was born in Newton, Iowa, and the Maid-Rite there is what had inspired my dad to start his own. We traveled all through Iowa and Illinois looking for a spot to build. We got to Canton, and he said "This is it". He liked the town instantly, and so did the rest of us. Thanks again.   Tom   Tom Lawrence was in the Canton High School class of 1954. 3. They say that the third time is charm. This is the third time that I have tried to post this since the subject of MaidRites came up. It could be classed as genealogy because my family came through Fulton County on their way west. One daughter married and died in Fulton County. The daughter of my great grandmother's brother, Graham Lowe, married Ira Kerr. He and his wife were the ones that invented Maid Rite Sandwich. I am from south-eastern Iowa and Maid Rites were in all of the towns. I knew that Ira and Gertrude lived in Illinois but never thought about this until after I have been reading your remiensences. When they came to see us there was a new bunch of outgrown clothes for us to wear. This was in the depression and this gift was very much.appreciated. Margaret Parsons

    1. [ILFULTON] Thanks for sharing the memories!
    2. TINA REED
    3. Hi Listers, I just got home yesterday from Fulton County. My baby sister got married in Smithfield and they had the reception in Cuba at the Legion. There were about 250 guests. We had quite a time! I see you all have been sharing your memories of Fulton County. Thanks so much for sharing!! Some of them have been very entertaining. I know the ones who have not lived in the area are probably tired of hearing them by now. I just wanted to add a few things. The tornado came through in July of 1975. I will never forget it. I think the city of Canton had just celebrated their Sesquintennial that day and it was just getting over with. Then the dark clouds came rolling in. We all knew it was going to hit and took cover. It hit and missed several places in Fulton County but Canton got the worst of it. It did a lot of damage. The other tornado that hit Canton was in June of 1835. The Norris Farms, is huge and is on Rt.78 and 97 before you go to Havana. My guess is that the corporation that bought it named it Norris Farms. I am not sure how many acres it covers but my guess would be close to a thousand or more. I just found out there is a huge Indian burial ground there. about 700 Indian mounds one of the oldest in the county and not to far from Dickinson Mounds. There are several Indian mounds all over Fulton County. It is not unusual for the farmers to work the fields and when the soil is turned over they discover arrow heads or some other tool the Indians used in their daily life. Coal is abundant - and there are plenty of Strip Mines. The strip mines dug out the coal and the land was put back for farming or pasture ground , the holes that were to large were made into ponds and stocked with fish. We-Ma-Tuk is a subdivision between Canton and Cuba built on Strip Mine ground. Lots of nice homes , it has a country club and a golf course. Spoon River, I have seen her so low back in the early 1970's that you could slide down the bank and walk right down the middle and jump from sandbar to sandbar without getting your feet wet. I have also seen her banks so swollen that no matter how many sandbags were put in place she broke through the levee and flooded the valley on Rt.9. The traffic was rerouted to Rt.95 through Seville. The Spoon River is very dangerous ,there are lots of sink holes and there have been a lot of people drown or got hurt from diving in. That is a big NO-NO. White's Ferry is about 3 miles North of Smithfield, you turn east and go past the Buckeye Church. From what a great aunt told me they used to have a ferry crossing there to cross the Spoon. This was way before my time. In my life time we used to go down to White's Ferry and fish off the bank and have a weiner roast. A lot of the neighbors would come and we would have a good ole time.... In our neighborhood, Deerfield township the neighbors would get togather and have a weiner roast and a hayrack ride. Everyone would bring a dish to pass. I have also went to many a Hog roast and we had one ourselves back in the 1980's when we lived there. We had just about 300 people show up. They came from all over the county and everyone was kind enough to bring food or something to drink , no one came empty handed. Midway is on Rt.9 ,the halfway mark between Canton and Bushnell, in McDonough County. The Spoon River Scenic Drive, is the 1st and 2nd weekends in October. The farmers are usually in the fields harvesting their crops. The fall colors are a sight to see in Fulton County. Since I have started my genealogy research I have learned a lot about the county I grew up in. And as Dorothy says, "There is no place like home." And home will always be Fulton County for me..... _________________________________________________________________ STOP MORE SPAM with the new MSN 8 and get 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail

I think the memories and social context of the area IS very much part of the genealogy. There are lots of time I am "bored" with the pure genealogy of any list because it often surname discussions that have nothing to do with my direct line, or even associates of my direct line, but the geography, places, customs, and "feel" of the place at least has some relevance to my people. Anyway, I think there is room for both discussions on the list--the pure vitals stats and the memories. Sarah

    2. Just another note on the reminiscing.... I've found that reminiscing on the various lists I've subscribed to has been a good source of information about the area. This type of exchange has invariably led to discussion on families in the area. In some cases I've seen where a particular phrase someone's family used suddenly became clear or that someone learned of a heretofore unknown relationship. For anyone who is interested only in black and white genealogical facts, without the addition of colour, the option, of course, remains to delete thse messages without reading them. Gloria

    3. I am new to this list. I live in Iowa , where it is snowing right now. But have enjoyed the reminiscing of everyone. I have never been there so it is kind of nice to know a little about the area and what it is like and what it use to be like. I also think that the stories of the family is as important as the data that we fine. Some of my Lopeman line comes from that area so it give me some idea of what it was like where they lived. It is also nice to read something besides just facts for a change since I do a lot of research for my self and other. So I just want to say thanks for the great stories. 2. I had family in Pairie City and in London Mills. My great-grand parents were Ellis and Gerta Dyekman. They lived in London Mills in their later years. I remember walking down town in the summer and listening to the band in the park by the river. I spent alot of my summer time with my extended families in Il. as a child. At one time my grandfather, George Enoch Sherman ran a grocery store in London Mills. One year he gave away plates to his customers. I would love to get my hands on one of these. Later on my grandfather lived in Prairie City and was then married to the post mistress, Agnes Sherman. She was there for many years. She still lives in Prairie City now. My Uncle Ben Sherman used to deliver mail to Ellisville I think. He now lives in Bushnell. My mother and father, Raymond Dale Myers and Imogene Rae Sherman Myers moved to Kansas when I was only 2 yrs old. I have many memories of the grandparents and summer vacations. 3. I'm not mad but you also need to realize that the memories of we who still live is the genealogy and history of our kids and grandkids and great-grandkids. Sometimes someone says or asks about something that awakes those memories. While I enjoyed reads all of the memories (including recalling some of my own), some others may not. I never lived in Fulton County either but we drove through on the way to visit my grandparents (325 mile on way) and I have special memories of places and things there. Everyone should get a note book and write these things down and keeps them for your descendants. Let the next generations know who you are and what you enjoyed, not just the data of facts and dates. 3. I have enjoyed reading all these memories of Canton and Spoon River. Sounds like a cozy little midwest town. My son lived in Bloomington for awhile and his wife went to school in Macomb (I live in Oregon, so a long ways away). But I enjoyed visiting him and going to the little midwest towns for different festivals, etc. Anyway, I am researching the Althiser family who lived in Canton in 1920 -40 era. I am particularly interested in Oscar and Lula Althiser and their son Roy, but Roy had quite a few half brothers. Any of you who are remembering that area remember the Althiser family? Betty

    3. I have a 1954 Canton City Directory and it lists E & M Hot Dog Stand managed by a Mrs. Ernesto Groppel at 61 N. First Ave. That would have been just a couple of doors to the south of the bus station at First Ave & Chestnut. My classmates remember it as having the best chili-dogs and tamales. There was also a Canton Chili Stand at 147 E Elm street but was not viewed highly by classmates (CHS 57). I still go regularly for coney dogs at Cranwill's south of Pekin on the way to Manito. They were previously an A&W facility but have dropped the franchise. The coney dogs taste just like I remember the coney dogs at the A&W south of Canton at the edge of town on route 78.
