For over 32 years I have been attempting to find the parents and/or family of one Martha THOMAS. An 1883 newspaper article has led me to this county and maybe someone on the list ties in or has the info I've hunted for so long. Martha THOMAS was born 30 May 1788 in NC. She married in Decatur, Macon, IL on 25 Feb 1808 to John D(arns) GORIN. John was a State Rep and the family moved to Vandalia IL when it was the state capitol. John died there 26 Apr 1846 and is buried in Decatur, IL with the rest of the family. Martha lived in Decatur, then moved for a time to Memphis, Scotland, MO to live with a son, Henry Madison Gorin. She died 13 July 1876 in Decatur and is buried there. Of her family I can find nothing until I saw the following article from the Decatur IL Daily Republican, 22 Aug 1883. "James THOMAS and family, of Farmington, arrived in Decatur with their household effects, and will make this city their home. They will occupy the Bear property, corner of North Church and Marietta streets, which was recently purchased by Mr. Thomas, who is a cousin of J. R. Gorin." J. R. Gorin was James Rinaldo Gorin, son of John D and Martha Thomas Gorin. This likely would be son of one of Martha's family. Does anyone tie in with this Thomas line that could point me back a generation or so? I have read the Fulton Co census on ancestry.com - some are mis indexed - can find none on the 1850 census in Farmington, but in other towns in the county. I would be forever in your debt - and if I can help out in Barren Co KY - I will! Hi, I checked the "Fulton County Place Names; A-Z" and it gave this info under 'Troy': A deserted village formerly in Union Twp, founded in 1823 by Nathaniel Childs. Another book gives 1833 as the founding date. Also, there was a Troy School in Union Twp; land donated by the Troy family. Judi Goodwin
I came across an obituary that says the person was buried in "Old Troy Cemetery" west of London Mills. Does anyone know if this cemetery is/was in Fulton Co. or Knox? Todd in Maquon --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? SBC Yahoo! DSL - Now only $29.95 per month!

Jan, There is a good book by E. Wade Hone "LAND & PROPERTY RESEARCH IN THE UNITED STATES," that would help you to have a better understanding of land records. Most genealogical libraries should have a copy if you would like to see the book before purchasing it. Be thankful that Illinois lands were surveyed using the rectangular survey system and not the metes and bounds system. I can understand the rectangular system and have a little trouble with the metes and bounds system. There might be a site online that would provide information on the survey systems. Darlene Shawn
Spent time in Lewistown Courthouse, searching Land Records. With the help of a young lady, I found what I was looking for. One of the properties, was referred to in the copy of a letter I received-as being of interest if one were to look into Military records. Now, how do I find the correct location of the properties? Is there a simple way to sort thru the NE by NW, Meridian....which makes no sense to me! Help! Jan

Hello to everyone on the list, I am trying to find my Aunt Viola (Wilson) Harmon/Harman/Harmen. She married, George E. Harmon Jan. 1, 1891 in Fulton, Illinois. George died Feb. 8, 1945 in Canton, Illinois. Born in Maryland, he would have been about 73 years old. I believe his father's name was John W. Harmon of Maryland. I believe George had two brothers, Daniel H. and William R. Harmon. In the 1920-1930 census, George and Viola were living in Canton. If anyone on the lists has information about the Harmon family or Viola, I would really appreciate hearing from you. Thank You Marsha
I am wondering if anyone can tell me if there is a William Jones b. 1867-1869 that is buried in Fulton County. His wife's name was Laura Fitch. I have been unable to locate a marriage record for them. They might be in the Waterford Cemetery. Thanks very much. Karen
If anyone has access to the Canton Daily Ledger obits from the mid 70's, I would really appreciate finding out what is in this obit. His older half-sisters are my connection to him and I am hoping that they or their children might be mentioned. Thanks, Bob
My ancestor Josiah Stout died in Fulton county between 1860 and 1870 but I have never found his grave. Most members of his family are buried in Greenwood cemetery in Canton. His wife is buried there in a plot owned by Reuben Huff, and the stone reads "Ann-wife of Josiah Stout" with dates. Next to her grave is an "unmarked grave", according to the cemetery book. What exactly does that mean? Is someone buried there? Was the marker lost or destroyed? Was there never a marker? Was no record made of whomever was buried there? Maybe no-one is buried there? Seek information from someone knowledgeable about this cemetery. Tony Kaney
I am looking for information about the death of a cousin, Robert C. Bostwick. According to the SS Death Index, he died at age 83 in Peoria, on Oct. 23, 2002. I am wondering if perhaps he was buried with his parents in the Farmington Cemetery. (Parents George & Mildred Bostwick, Section 7.) Thank you for any information or an obituary. Karen

I big THANK YOU to all who helped me find out how to find this index. I was searching for information on family members of Elder Aaron and Hannah (Whiteley) Wright. They both died in 1875. What I already know about him -- He was born in S. C. on 2 May 1808. He moved with his parents (names unknown) to Tennessee when Aaron was quite young. He lived in Tennessee (or over the line in Kentucky) till he was grown and married. We don't know the name of this wife. We do know that they had three children -- James (b. ca 1828-29); Joseph (b. 18 Feb. 1830 and m. Elizabeth Hale); Aaron (b. 1 May 1833 and m. Martha E. Walters). They moved to Clay County, Illinois about 1833. We don't know when his first wife died, but we find him in Cass County, Illinois in 1838 where he married Hannah Whiteley. They moved to Fulton County in Farmers Township in the mid to late 1840's. He became a minister (or "elder") in the Primitive Baptist Church and preached several years to a congregation called the Little Flock Church of Spoon River Association located near Table Grove, Illinois. In the 1850's they moved to Iowa and later Missouri serving as an Elder in the Primitive Baptist Church. They came back to Illinois about 1863 and he preached at the Mt. Zion Primitive Baptist Church in Woodland Township until near the time of his death in 1875. We think they were living over the county line in Schuyler County when they died. He and Hannah (Whiteley) had eight children. As far as I know, they were -- Margaret E. (b. ca 1842) married Peter Rhoades/Rhodes John C. (b. ca. 1843) George L. (b. ca 1846) Lydia Jane (b. ca 1847) married Thomas William Bonser Gilbert B. (b. ca 1849) Emma (b. ca. 1851) Addie (b. ca. 1852 Caroline (b. ca 1855) What I would really like to know is who Aaron's first wife was as my husband is descended from her son, Joseph and Elizabeth (Hale) Wright. The names of Aaron Wright's parents. Also, I would like any information anyone could give about James Wright (b. ca 1828-29) and all of the children of Aaron and Hannah (Whiteley) Wright. I know this is a big order, but any help would be appreciated. Mary Ruth Wright
