    1. [ILFULTON] Corey family of Fulton Co 1860>
    2. Linda Garrett
    3. I used to be on the Fulton Co. list when I was researching the Burnetts and Holts. I now have found that a colateral line also moved to Fulton Co. from Shaftsbury, Bennington, VT. Truman Corey and wife Mary (Millington) settled there after being in Medina Co. OH. in the 1850 census. Mary was the sister of Caroline (Millington) Burnett, w/o John Burnett. Their son, George married Ann E. Holt of Bernadotte, Fulton Co. I have found that one of the Corey children, George married Sarah Green, sister of Daniel Green who married Minerva Holt. I would be interested in any info on the Coreys of Fulton Co. This is what I have so far: Truman Corey b. abt. 1806 VT d. 1892 Fulton Co buried Stites Cemetery Mary Corey nee Millington b. abt. 1816 VT d. ?? buried Stites Cemetery Ch: Sophia Corey b.abt. 1835 VT George Corey b. 1849 OH Hiram Corey b. abt. 1854 IL Don't find a marriage for Sophia George married Sarah Green...January 01, 1874 (found on IL marriage site) Ch. of George and Sarah: Alta Corey b. abt. 1875 married Harvey Overdorff August 28, 1890 McDonough Co. 3. Hi Listers, I got this information from one of my other mailing lists. The story was put out by Eastmans on line genealogy (you can read all about it) those nasty websights genseekers.com and genealogygiants.com, the ones who offered FREE access to billions of records for a 5 day free trial. as long as you gave them a credit card # or bank account #. They got busted ! they were based in Cedar Rapids IA. Identity theft and a few other charges. Just thought I would let you know. 3. Wayne, Were your Gregory's related to any Wilcoxen's in Fulton Co.? Amy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 12:59 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [ILFULTON] Gragory Family info needed I am always encouraged by the response to posts made to this web site, and would like to add my queries to those already posted. Oscar Y. Gregory moved from Fillmore, MO to Canton (Fulton County) IL in about June, 1852. It appears that he was in that area for about 2 years before returning to Missouri. Since he was not living in Illinois during a census period, I am at a loss about how to track him. It is not known whether he purchased a farm, or whether he only speculated on farm crops and livestock. (Based on other info, he seemed to be a speculator more than a farmer by temperament) How large of a place was Canton in that era? Was it a location where a livestock speculator might have been likely to settle? Why? Was there something in Canton's history that was important enough to draw settlers back from out west, (MO) during that period? Does anyone know of any major trail that Canton lays on that extended into northern MO? Does anyone have any ideas about how I might proceed with my investigation of this family? Are there Gregory families still living in the area? Is there a good library in the area that I might contact? What is the address of the Historical society for Fulton County--any email address? I would appreciate any help/info and am willing to share any info that I have about the Gregory family. Wayne Gilbert [email protected]

    3. Carol, I cannot be much help to you on any of this, but I am related to the Coopers that moved from Holmes Co., OH. to Fulton Co., IL. You can email me if you like at [email protected] Your names do not match my names, but who knows, they could be kin. Good luck in your searches! Amy -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, August 03, 2003 8:20 PM To: Subject: [ILFULTON] Martha HILTON - Spencer COOPER HELP!! As usual I am confused and need the help of clearer, wiser heads. I've always found them here and pray you all will come through as usual. I am trying to sort out my family lines that seem to cross and keep crossing. I've about decided that given enough time and info I'll be able to prove my relationship to everyone who lived in or around Cuba, IL in the latter half of the 19th C. I have the following: Polly SWEARINGEN [b. 1812, OH], d/o of Samuel SWEARINGEN & Mary WILSON, m. Spencer COOPER 24 Dec 1831, Adams Co., OH 1850 Canton, Fulton, Illinois Census lists Spencer COOPER household [71/76]: COOPER, Spencer, 43, male, farmer, b. KY; Mary COOPER, 38, female, b. OH; Jemima COOPER, 17, female, b. OH; Drucilla COOPER, 15, female, b. OH; George COOPER, 12, male, b. IL; Eliza T. COOPER, 10, female, b. IL; Isabell COOPER, 8, female, b. IL; Andrew COOPER, 5, male, b. IL; Mary C. COOPER, 1, female, b. IL; Sarah BISHOP, 19, female, b. OH Martha HILTON [b. 1815/1818, ME], d/o David HILTON & Elizabeth "Betsey" GRAY, m. Spencer COOPER 31 May 1851, Fulton Co., IL Martha COOPER m. George W. SHEAFF 2 Nov 1858, Fulton Co., IL Sarah Ann BISHOP, d/o William E. BISHOP & Catherine SWEARINGEN, m. David HILTON 1 Jan 1851, Fulton Co., IL [David and Martha HILTON were brother & sister] / Sarah Ann BISHOP was Polly (SWEARINGEN) COOPER's niece. What I'm thinking is that Sarah Ann was living with her aunt and uncle in 1850, possibly because her aunt was ill; that her Aunt Polly died and her Uncle Spencer then married David HILTON's sister Martha HILTON. Then Spencer died leaving Martha a widow and she married George SHEAFF in 1858. The problem is that I can't find Martha, George, or the younger COOPER children in 1860. Does someone out there know if my premise is correct and/or what happened to Martha, George, and Polly & Spencer's children. Thanks for your patience with me in my never ending confusion and for any help you can offer. Carol As ususal, Lost in Knoxville ______________________________

    1. [ILFULTON] Spencer COOPER - SWEARINGEN / HILTON
    2. Thanks to all who have helped get me on the right path trying to determine if the relationship between Spencer COOPER h/o Polly SWEARINGEN & Spencer COOPER h/o Martha HILTON. I found there were 3 Spencer COOPER marriages in Fulton Co. between 1851-1860. None, apparently, were the Spencer who m. Polly SWEARINGEN as he was found in 1860-1880 censuses in Liverpool w/ various daughters. Bless him, at least by his moving from daughter to daughter, I was able to confirm the marriages of Jemima, Drucilla, and Eliza COOPER. I am still looking for death/burial info on Spencer, w. Mary/Polly -- prob. in Liverpool and on Spencer Cooper m. Martha Hilton 1851 and d. bef 1858 [I think]. Thanks again. As always the Fulton Co. List has come through. Carol

I have just run across a family picture of 3 Williams children, with their mother, Mary Belle Ruey, and Grandmother Sarah Sophia Addis Ruey. Now in this picture is Marie Meeker Stricler and two childen. Does anyone know if this Marie Meeker is the daughter of Laura Ruey Meeker? Laura would be another daughter of Sophia Addis Ruey. Laura was bornJanuary 21, 1872 in Fulton Co., Il. died 1030 and buried at Orendorff Cem. She married James Meeker October 4, 1891. I have no information for him and only child that I have is Henry Meeker b. 1899. Thanks for your help. Danni Monn Hopkins granddaughter of Sarah Jane Williams Monn

    1. [ILFULTON] COOPER / SWEARINGEN / HILTON ???
    2. Thanks to a little help from my friends, I've come up with the following: Spencer Cooper and Martha Hilton Cooper Sheaf appeared in the 1860 Liverpool, Fulton Co. census -- Spencer living w/dau. Jemima & Johnathan Pollitt, and his 2 younger children Andrew & Mary; Martha living with her mother Betsey Hilton in Cuba. Then Spencer's son George was found with his sister Drucilla & Jacob Huffman again in Liverpool. Haven't found Eliza or Isabell Cooper. Now if Martha Hilton married this above Spencer Cooper in 1851 as I suspected, they must have divorced before she married George Sheaf in 1858. And what happened to George? He was no where to be found in 1860. Definitely, Polly Swearingen Cooper must have died before 1860. Were there 2 Spencer Coopers in Fulton Co. during that decade? Jeepers!! This crew keeps my head spinning. If anyone has access to Liverpool Cemetery or funeral home records, could you look for Mary/Polly (Swearingen) Cooper and George Sheaff. I know Jemima and Johnathan Pollitt were buried there. Maybe Spencer and Polly Cooper were buried there also. Thanks, Carol

( They married 1853) Living with them is Spencer Cooper, age 53 and two of his children - Andrew and Mary. The rest of the children were probably married too. I'll check further on this 1860 census for them. Lyde

    1. [ILFULTON] John WINKLER / Caroline MANDANS or MATAUS??
    2. Hi all, I was so inspired by Valerie's success, I thought I'd try again to add to the info on my gg grandparents John and Caroline WINKLER. This is what I know: John b. 17 Jan 1827, Germany; immigrated to US 1853 / poss. naturalized 1860; d. 17 Feb 1924, Cuba, IL; bur. Cuba Cem. There was an article about him about 2 years before his death in a local paper, but I have no idea which one or how to find out. His wife Caroline had died in 1896 and he had been married to 2nd wife Mary Catherine HOWERTER since about 1899. I'm sure there was an obit, but where? His surviving sons were Herman and John F. Winkler. I found a note I had made to myself that reads "Joannes Georgius WINKLER / b. 17 Jan 1827 / christened 1 Apr 1827 / Roemisch-Katholisch / Germersheim, Pfalz, Bayern / fa. Michaele WINKLER / mo. Margaretha HENZLER" I not remember making this note and have no idea where the info came from. But, I have learned that Roemisch-Katholisch is Roman Catholic and that Germersheim is a village in Germany near Mannheim on the Rhine River. Pfalz is the area around there and is today called Rheinland-Pfalz. 150 years ago the area belonged to the Kingdom of Bayern or Bavaria. That all makes sense, but I'm not sure where it leads me. I can't find how John came to this country, but I believe he landed in Philadelphia around 1853. I don't know when or how he met my gg grandmother, but they supposedly met after each had immigrated. Both were supposedly from Bavaria. My gg grandmother is a real puzzel. She too was born in Germany 28 Dec 1829 and immigrated to the US. She are John were married in 28 Mar 1856 in Peoria. The info on the marriage lists her maiden name as MANDANS. The Cuba Cemetery book has MATAUS. One of the censuses says she was born in Bavaria. She died 29 Jul 1896 in Cuba and is buried in Cuba Cemetery. I can't even be sure what her surname was. Someone out there must have a clue, but I have yet to find them. There are no WINKLER descendants in that area from this line as both surviving sons each had only one daughter. John F. m. Mary Jane HICKS and had a daughter Anna m. Lee Edward Gray. Herman m. Mary Margaret "Maggie" HENDERSON and had a daughter Avis. I'm hoping there are still relatives in the area who could shed some light on Caroline's surname or add other info about John and clan. I know he came over with other members of his family -- just not who they were. The article I have on him mentions the recent death of his last remaining sibling, a sister, but not her name or where she lived. My mother seemed to think that several WINKLER siblings and possibly even his parents immigrated, but I have no way of knowing. Any help would be greatly appreciate. You see, my own great grandfather, Anton WINKLER, John and Caroline's youngest son, died in 1896 after moving his little family to south Alabama. His young widow and their 3 children maintained contact with John and the brothers after Anton's death and the children were mentioned in John's will in 1924, each receiving $5000. After John's death.... I hope to find a missing cousin out there who can help, or at least some kind soul who can point me in the right direction. Carol in Knoxville, TN

    1. [ILFULTON] UPDATE!!! Hazel Longwell ~ I found her!
    2. Hi all~! I just had to share this really neat story! For the past 8 years, I have been searching for ANY member of the LONGWELL family who lived in Knox/Fulton county from 1860 to around 1955. My grandfather Longwell died at age 23 (in 1921), leaving an infant son. His widow remarried and could never give any details about the LONGWELL family to her son. That boy (my dad) grew up, but never really put any effort into finding any of his relatives. He wasn't even sure if he had any to look for. When he was in his 70's with heart failure, he suddenly had a desire to find ANY living blood relatives. I told him I would do whatever I could ------ so I began searching Moline IL, which is the last place his father was from before marrying my grandmother in 1919. I learned that his grandfather's name was Thomas, living with a (4th) wife and a daughter Dorothy in 1920. I searched for Dorothy (my dad's aunt), only to find she died in 1981. Her two sons really were not interested in meeting us or even keeping up with correspondence. So that trail sadly died. Strike One. The trail remained empty (on his marriage cert he listed mother as "Does not remember") So, I finally had to go TO the court house and found the divorce records for his father, Thomas Longwell. I learned that Thomas was married several times, each one ending in divorce. While reading these documents, I learned that Thomas' first wife was Grace Chambers. The divorce was granted in 1896, and a daughter -- HAZEL b. 1894 -- was ordered to live with her mother, who quickly remarried Howard BRIGHT. I have been searching for Hazel since 1995 --- I even search SS death records for any "HAZEL" born that year, and always came up blank. One month ago, I decided this was futile, and gave up my search. Last week -- I received an E-mail from a family in Saskachewan Canada who found an old post of mine from 1998 ---- Their ggrandmother is HAZEL LONGWELL!! She was put up for adoption at age 9, but kept her surname! Her adoptive parents moved to Canada when she was still young! They just sent me a photo of her when she was 9 years old, shortly after her adoption. I am so excited ----I never DREAMED to look for her in Saskachewan!? The family says many other families left for Canada from that part of Illinois at the same time her adoptive family left. I am so excited to finally find HAZEL!!! I really felt this was a lost cause. Unfortunately, my father passed away in 1998, so he'll never get a chance to meet them eye to eye. Now I will continue my quest for Etta May (May Etta) Ingram Longwell Wagner -- my ggrandmother, Thomas' second wife. They had only one child before divorce, and that child is my dad's father. If Etta May (May Etta) had anymore children after the 1900 divorce, then I might have even more living relatives that I don't know about! For anyone searching for lost relatives of Knox and Fulton county, who vanished about 1905-1915, you may want to try Saskatechewan, near Regina. Just a hunch! Also -- never change your email address :) Valerie
