Hello fellow researchers! I am trying to find if an obituary would possibly exist for Joseph H. Fitch who died Mar 29, 1893. I very kind person provided me with the death date and informaton that he is buried in the Waterford Cemetery (no marker). I have been unable to locate any death record for him. I certainly could use some help. Karen Palm City, FL

There is a 1910 photo of the Cuban Unions, a baseball team, on p. 225 of A History of Fulton County Illinois in Spoon River Country 1818-1968. There is no commentary, but this was obviously a team during the era in question. Carol
During the time period in question baseball was one of the major summer forms of entertainment. Canton had many teams and according to Ed Lewis's book "Reflections of Canton", "it was not until the 1890's that the first of the famous Canton traveling teams became recognized throughout the Central Illinois area." Some of the teams were the "Creamos", "Redskins", Canton Grays, Max ----- Original Message ----- From: "Danni Hopkins" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 3:17 PM Subject: [ILFULTON] Fulton Co., Il. Hi, It there any of the Danner Family that has a bible or something that gives the Month of the birthday of Walter English that was married to Sarah Catherine Danner English. I know he was born in the right year of 1866 to be the man I am looking for but need to know the month he was born so I can possible prove that he is my husbands grandfather. In Sarah's obit it says he died in 1900. Is there anyone that knows when in 1900 and where? I have talked to a Great granddaughter of this Walter English and she doesn't know either. I would appreciate anyone that could tell me where to look if or to have any suggestions, to find this information. I am willing to look up anything. Thank you. Charlotte English

Hi, I am passing on a great site for searching obits and death notices that someone shared with me. If you ever need to log in, use "guest" as name and password but usually you aren't asked. You "check" the papers you wish to include in your search. The Chicago Tribune has archived obits from 1860-1984 in their HA(Historic Archives) collection. Not all of their years are indexed yet, but they are continually adding more. Most of the other papers listed are more current, as is the case of the Peoria Journal Star and St. Louis Post Dispatch. When searching in the Chicago area, I "checked" all of the Chicago papers that were listed. You might start with a surname search in obits and death notices. if you don't find it there, do a general search in the HA area. That too will pull up the older obits. You can find out if that year is indexed yet by doing a search with a year or a date. Check it out. Especially if you have any lines in the Chicago area. It's such fun when you find an obit or death notice. They have so much information that is helpful and a number of states have papers you can choose. NewsBank InfoWeb http://infoweb.newsbank.com/iw-search/we/Homepage?p_action=doc& p_theme=current&p_nbid=X53H54HLMTA2MDMwNDE0Mi45MDI2ODg6MTo1Omd1ZXN0 Good luck. I swear my family tree is winding around Fulton Co. and meeting itself. In tracing my step-gg grandmother's HOWERTER/HOWARTER line I came upon Cora HOWERTER m. Samuel Loren HUFFMAN. His parents are James HUFFMAN & Catherine PAUL. Can anyone tell me who Catherine's parents are? I have a Catherine PAUL, d/o Joseph PAUL & Mary BISHOP b. 1844, no other info on her. Her age would be about right, and I was wondering if my tree limbs had intertwined yet once again? Thanks for your patience with me and all your help. Carol
I would also be interested to know if there are any records for Canton High School, or any information about the school. At the time my grandmother Elizabeth Taneyhill and her sister Edith Taneyhill attended, in the early 1900s, it was called "New High School." I have a sterling silver spoon that belonged to my grandmother with an etching of a picture of the school in the bowl of the spoon with the words "NEW HIGH SCHOOL" and "CANTON, ILL." I understand it was later changed to Canton High School. Elizabeth Ruygt Researching: Taneyhill, Smith, Barnard, Lyon(s)
Sorry bout the email trouble, I can't seem to figure that out, but yea you did, thanks for checkin' Charlotte, <<Charlotte - did I send you the Glasford Gazette obit for John's wife, Albertina Hand Rusch? If not, would you want that? Lyde>> .
Does anyone know if there is an alumni list for Canton High School on line like there is for Lewistown? Also are there records available for students and teachers at Cuba and Canton? My great grandmother Cordie Bishop and her sisters Priscilla and Grace DeWitt all graduated from Cuba High in the 1890s and then taught in Cuba / Cordie's daughters Pansy and Thelma Read graduated from Canton High about 1919. Cordie Bishop Read, their mother, would have been living and teaching in the area at that time. I can't find the family in 1920. They were in AL in 1910 and again in 1930, but they were definitely in Fulton Co. for a period in between. Carol

Someone else must know something about this family. Surely he had brothers who also immigrated. Or possibly one of John or Herman's descendants is also searching. More details of the scammer from another list. We need to be cautious. Karen By Register News Services 08/03/2003 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ CEDAR RAPIDS Web site owner charged with ID theft A man was charged Friday with identity theft and money laundering after a police investigation into two genealogy Web sites he ran. Elias Abodeely II operated the Web sites FamilyDiscovery.com and Genseekers.com from his home. Abodeely would take e-mail addresses of people who posted to the sites' forum pages, then send the victims an offer to become a member of the Web site for a fee of $19.99 to $59.99. The offer led victims to believe they had a five-day free trial period, but they were unable to cancel their memberships. Their accounts were already debited the fee amount. Cedar Rapids police arrested Abodeely after a two-year investigation into the genealogy Web site. He also faces theft and ongoing criminal conduct charges. Police said the investigation continues, and they expect additional suspects to be charged.
