    3. JOHNSTON CITY - "Bette" Helen Carter, 82, passed away at 3:40 a.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013, in Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin. Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday April 29, in First Christian Church in Johnston City, with Pastor Lee Petty officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery of Johnston City. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Murman and Wilson Funeral Home in Johnston City. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church. Envelopes will be available at the church or at the funeral home. Bette was born Feb. 20, 1931, in Johnston City the daughter of John Charles and Juanita Rose (Higginson) Shukites. She married Willie E. Carter on Feb. 20, 1949, in Johnston City. He preceded her in death July 25, 2005. Bette had worked for Sears for 26 years as an executive secretary, retiring in 1987. She was a teacher at Presbyterian Church in East Chicago, Ind., and she was a member of First Christian Church of Johnston City. She is survived by a daughter, Donna D. Walsh and husband, Bruce, of Abilene, Texas; a son, Willie Keith Carter of Portage, Ind.; three granddaughters, Holly Elizabeth Carter of Ft. Worth, Texas, Tanya Hilier and husband, Shane, of Hebron, Ind., and Michelle Cwetna of Crown Point, Ind.; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Charleen Moore and husband, Marion, of West Frankfort and Marilyn Clements and husband, Ralph, of Arnold, Mo.; one brother, John Shukites and wife, Judi, of Christopher; and several nieces and nephews.
