    3. Register-News, Mt Vernon IL, 21 June 1952 FRED E. DURKEE HURT IN ACCIDENT Fred E. DURKEE, 64, of 120 north 16th street, was injured at 4:40 p.m. in an unusual accident on south Tenth street. Mr. DURKEE was driving a railway Express truck. According to a report of the accident at police headquarters, the truck slid when he applied the brakes at Tenth and Lamar, and he was thrown from the truck. The report said the brakes apparently were damp because of the rainstorm. After the driver was thrown out the truck struck a parked car owned by Bob KREBS. Mr. DURKEE was taken to Jefferson Memorial Hospital, where attendants said he suffered bruises and was not seriously hurt. == Register-News, Mt Vernon IL, Thurs 8 Sept 1960 FRED DURKEE DIES AT AGE 72; FUNERAL SUNDAY Fred E. DURKEE died at 5:20 a.m. today at his home, 2013 Perkins. He was 72 years, four months, and 20 days old. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Central Church of Christ with J.G. PARSONS and Don WORTMAN officiating. Burial will be in Harveys Point cemetery, near Carter. The body will lie in state at the Pulley Funeral Home where friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Saturday. At noon Sunday the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until the funeral hour. Mr. DURKEE was born April 18, 1887, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of L.K. and Terresa (PORTER) DURKEE. He was first married to Ethel KEELE, who died in 1949. In 1953 he married Nellie SEVERNS, who survives. Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Inez HICKS of this city, and Mrs. Helen Van HORN of Chicago; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters; two sisters; and four brothers. Mr. DURKEE was a deacon and a member of the choir in the Southwest Church of Christ.
