    3. DU QUOIN - Marion "Doc" Carter, 89, of Springville, Ala., formerly of Du Quoin, passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2013, in VA Medical Center in Birmingham, Ala. Marion had served in the U.S. Army as a scout on the frontlines in France and Germany during World War II. He returned home to work on the family farm. He was born Nov. 1, 1923, in Mulkeytown, the son of William and Frances (Davis) Carter. He married Bertha Tilley on June 7, 1991, and she preceded him in death in 2009. He is survived by five stepdaughters, Candess (Jerry) Higgerson of Pinckneyville, Kimberly (Steve) Ruff of Du Quoin, Sandra Osborne of Du Quoin, Julie Osburne of Willisville and Amy (Mike) Kabat of Tamaroa; 11 grandchildren, Michael (Melissa) Higgerson of Pinckneyville, Nathan Ruff of Du Quoin, Lindsey Cooper of Du Quoin, Tyler (Jessica) Cooper of Du Quoin, Justin of Du Quoin, Dustin (Amanda) Jaroski of Du Quoin, Tommy Anheuser of Waltonville, Casey Anheuser of Waltonville, Jamie Anheuser of Tamaroa and Dalton Anheuser of Tamaroa; 11 great-grandchildren; and five sisters, Margie Goring of Dewyville, Utah, Katherine Vitale of Paris, Tenn., Frances Hunsaker of Troy, Mont., and Barb Reed of Las Cruces, N.M. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; stepdaughter, Roberta Bryant; son-in-law, William Bryant; grandson, William Cullen Bryant; and two brothers, Charles Carter and Bill Carter. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 27, in Old Du Quoin Cemetery, with the Rev. Dennis Fitzsimmons officiating. Those attending the service are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Memorials may be made to Gospel Assembly Church in Du Quoin and will be accepted at the funeral home. Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin is in charge of arrangements.
