Shirley A. Summers, 77, of Benton passed away Thursday morning, March 7, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born in Benton on April 16, 1935, the daughter of Troy and Vevia (Threewitt) Knight. Mrs. Summers was a member of the Greater Life Sanctuary Church in Benton. She was married to Donald Eugene Summers, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 24, 2001. Mrs. Summers is survived by her six children, Sandra Newbolds of Marion, David Summers of Joliet, John Summers of Herrin, Jerry Summers of Carbondale, Jeff Summers and wife Christal of Madisonville, Tenn., and Tammy Summers of Benton; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; five sisters, Joyce Duchene and husband Arthur of Mulkeytown, Audrey Gilliam of Benton, Linda Summers of Benton, Judy Green of Benton and Marilyn Knight of Benton; and one brother, Eddie Knight of Cobden. Mrs. Summers loved all of her family very much. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son, Keith; a sister, Kathy Gulley; and an infant brother. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Mark Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitiation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
