A few hours later, Aug. 10, at 12:20 midnight, he passed gently. It was exactly the way that he wanted to go. He lived large and was generous with that life, drawing all those around him into his circle of music, stories, good food and laughs. He is survived by his lovely wife of 66 years, Ruth Elizabeth Burzynski Grammer. She loved him deeply; Billy was born Aug. 28, 1925, in Franklin County, to Archie and Stella Grammer, who preceded him in death. Four brothers also preceded him in death, John, Don, Charles and Carl Grammer, and one grandson, Jeff Blair. Billy is survived by wife, Ruth, and their three children, Donna (David) Blair of Nashville, Tenn., Dianne (Alan) Mezger of Dallas, Texas, and Billy (Sally) Grammer of Richardson, Texas. He is also survived by four brothers and four sisters, Lonnie (Verla) of Royalton, Archie (Sharon) of Waterford, Mich., Darrell (Judy) of Eddyville, Ky., and Carroll Grammer of Cadiz, Ky., Ramona Taskey, Ruby Talley and Carolyn Williams, all of Benton, and Sharon (Stan) Moser of Pleasant Prairie, Wis. In addition, he is survived by eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Billy was an accomplished singer and guitarist who had a lifelong career in music. From 1955 until 1959, Billy played lead guitar on "The Jimmy Dean Show." He is perhaps best known for his No. 1 hit record in 1958, "Gotta Travel On." In February 1959, Billy became a lifetime member of the Grand Ope Opry in Nashville, Tenn. The Opry Family was very special to Billy. He spent several years traveling and performing with many of them. Billy was a member of the Rend City Baptist Church, and he was a Gideon. Funeral services will be at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. Pastor John West presiding. Interment will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Billy may be sent to the charity of your choice.
