    3. Lucille Newell, 96 years young, passed away Wednesday March 27, 2013, at Stonebridge Senior Living Center in Benton. She was born Carrie Lucille Hodge on December 2, 1916 in Sesser, the daughter of Charles Quince and Dora Hodge. She married George W. Fagan on October 7, 1933. Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, George W. Fagan, second husband, Kermit Newell, two sisters, Estelle Holloway and Irene Green; four brothers, James Olin Hodge, William Francis Hodge, Charles Ray Hodge and Gary Lloyd Hodge. She is survived by one daughter Maxine Marie Denham and husband Ted of Ewing IL, one son Danny Joe Fagan and wife Teresa of Valley Center, CA.; four grandchildren Antionette "Toni" and husband Kirbie Metheney of McLeansboro, Terri and husband Duane Ladage of Loami, Tracy and husband Darren Fletcher of Benton and Courtney Rieches of Valley Center CA.; five great- grandchildren Cortne, Sadie and Hunter Fletcher and Laura and husband Travis Halstead and Lisa and husband Ryan Offermann; three great-great-grandchildren Blayze Halstead and Landon and Rylan Offermann. Lucille and George started married life by living with George's father, Joe Fagan, on his farm west of Waltonville. Lucille did housework and George helped with farming. After about a year they moved to a farm northwest of Waltonville. Lucille resided in Waltonville since 1941. Prior to that she and husband George resided in Eddyville IL, Mt. Vernon IL, Decatur IL and twice in California. She was a devout Christian and was a lifelong, active member of the Waltonville Methodist Church. Lucille worked as a cook at the Waltonville High School for many, many years, starting in 1953. The kitchen was located next to the study hall at the school with a swinging door between the rooms. A few current Waltonville residents still remember her sneaking cookies to them during their study hall hour. During that time at the high school she took two months leave of absence and made the trip to Centralia to attend Beauty School. She then passed her exams and became a licensed Beautician and operated a Beauty Shop out of her home for many years. For extra income she and neighbor Nina Dees also hung wallpaper for homes in the Waltonville area for a number of years. In 1969 she married Kermit Newell in a private ceremony at her daughter Maxine's home. Lucille and Kerm had many wonderful years together; with family, going out for Tom Raymond's fish sandwiches or Maid-Rites, traveling, gardening and taking care of the orchard until Kerm's passing in 1977. Lucille,"Grandma, Grandma Lucy", will be remembered for her strong-willed, hard-working, never- give- up approach to life (she could give just as hard as she would get), her zest for life (she would try almost anything once), her wonderful sense of humor, her "smack your Grandma" cooking, her strong Christian faith and her love and devotion for her family and friends. She will be forever missed. The family would like to extend a debt of gratitude to the staff at Stonebridge for their love and care they have shown our family and grandma. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Il with Pastor Clark Lance officiating.
