Whitlow, age 77 of Highland, IL, died Friday, March 01, 2013, at Saint Louis University Hospital in Saint Louis, MO. He was born September 29, 1935, in Benton, IL, the son of Walter Akin and Thelma Marie (nee Klinker) Whitlow. On May 28, 1954, he married Helen June Robertson who survives . He was a member of Highland Hope United Methodist Church. He was also a former member of Highland Chamber of Commerce. Gano was born in Benton, IL and was a 1954 graduate of Valier High School in Benton. He had worked for John Greene Stores; P.N. Hirsch Company; Cousin Fred's in Cape Girardeau, MO; and Car['s Super Center in Topeka, KS. In 1969 he opened Gano's Department Store in Highland. He closed the store in 1984. He started to work for Wal-Mart in Harrisburg, IL and moved from store to store including Booneville, IN, Eureka, and Edwardsville, IL. He retired from Wal-Mart in 2000. For over 35 years, Gano was a referee for high schools sports. He enjoyed feeding the birds; as a Cardinal Baseball fan;liked watching college basketball and football; and liked old TV shows-Gunsmoke, Bonanza & M.A.S.H.
