The Harrisburg Daily Register, Thursday, January 29, 1948 Sesser Man Kills Brother-in-law To Protect Sister BENTON, Ill., Jan. 29.— <U.P.> Trevor Mygatt admitted to authorities today that he fatally shot his brother-in-law last night in an attempt to protect his sister. Mygatt said he shot Nelson Downey, 43-year-old Sesser coal miner, when Downey entered the kitchen of his home with a rifle, apparently intending to harm his estranged wife who had been living with the Mygatts. Mrs. Vera Downey had been living with her brother and his family, five blocks away from her own home in Sesser, since the couple separated last Thursday. Downey died in the Miners' hospital at Christopher about two hours afterward of a .32 caliber revolver wound. Jan. 31 — <U.P.> A coroner's jury returned a verdict of "justifiable homicide" in the death of Nelson Downey, 43-year-old Sesser miner who was shot and fatally wounded by his brother-in-law Wednesday night. Trevor Mygatt admitted that he shot Downey after Downey entered his home with a rifle and threatened, he said, to kill everyone present. He said Downey apparently intended to harm his estranged wife, who had been living with the Mygatts. Mrs. Downey was Mygatts sister. The jury recommended that Mygatt be absolved of all blame in the killings.
