Vernon Daily Register - Wednesday, December 21, 1910 EWING RESIDENT HAS LIVED 100 YEARS - Mrs. Eliza Pearce Still Possesses Her Faculties and Hopes to Live Many More Years Mrs. Eliza PEARCE, of Ewing, IL, is perhaps the oldest woman in the state. She will be 100 years old January 1, 1911, and the time is so close that she is entitled to be called 100 years old. On January first, the birthday of Mrs. PEARCE will be observed and a big dinner will be given by her son, J. J. PEARCE, at Ewing. On this occasion Mr. PEARCE hopes to have a large outpouring and has asked the Register to extend the invitation to friends in this vicinity. (Photo here) Mrs. PEARCE was born and raised in Johnson County, N.C., January 1, 1811. She was married to Richard PEARCE in 1832. To this union nine children were born, but all are dead except W. C. and J. J. PEARCE and Mrs. Mary E. CAMPBELL. Mr. and Mrs. PEARCE came to Illinois in 1832, locating in Saline County, and a few years later located in Franklin County where they made their settled home. Mr. PEARCE died in 1886 and since that time Mrs. PEARCE has lived with the family of J. J. PEARCE. The old lady is in possession of all faculties and gets around, with the aid of a cane, remarkably well. She is in the best of health and enjoys her three meals a day to the fullest extent. There are 29 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. On New Years Day when the five generations are assembled, there will be a great celebration. Middle Fork Cemetery, Northern Township, Franklin County, IL Pearce, Eliza Tombstone Inscription: Pearce, Eliza01 Jan 181115 May 1913 _____ 29 Dec 1911 Next Monday Mrs. Eliza Pearce of Ewing will be 101 years of age and the occasion will be celebrated by a large number of her relatives and friends.She was born on New Year's day, 1811, eight years before Illinois was a state and admitted to the union. 5 January 1912 Mrs. Pearce is perhaps the oldest woman in the state.Her birthday was observed at the home of her son, W C Pearce of near Ewing.She was born in Johnson County, North Carolina 1 January 1811, the eldest of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rains. Only three of the children are still living:Mrs. Pearce, Mrs. Jane Langley of Princeton, NC, and Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips of Dillon, Montana.Eliza was married to Richard Pearce in 1832. There were born to this union nine children but all are dead except W C and J J Pearce and Mrs. Mary Campbell.Mr. and Mrs. Pearce came to Illinois in 1833.Locating in Saline County and a few years later moved to Franklin County.Mr. Pearce died in 1866 and since that time Mrs. Pearce has lived with her sons, both of whom are well-to-do farmers.She has been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for over50 years.She is in possession of all her facilities and loves to talk about olden times.She enjoys the best of health and never fails to eat three meals each day.She has 29 grand children, 28 great grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.At the time Elizabeth and Richard lived in Benton, there were no railroads in the country.Richard was a teamster and hauled country produce from the Benton merchants to St Louis, where they exchanged them for goods, principally groceries, in those days, and hauled the goods back to Benton, camping at night or staying with the few settlers that lived on the route.W C Pearce, then a small boy, made several with him and on one occasion helped to drive a drove of hogs through to St Louis.At that time St Louis was only a small river landing.They crossed the river by Ferry.The years have dealt kindly with her, but while we speak of age in a mournful strain, it is honorable and eloquent. If any must weep let it be the young at the long succession of cares that are before them. Welcome the snow of age for it is theemblem of peace and rest. _____ 23 May 1913 Mrs. Eliza Pearce died suddenly Sunday morning at the home of her son, J J Pearce, near Ewing, aged 102.The funeral services were held Monday afternoon in the Primitive Baptist Church at Webb's Hill, Rev W I Carnell of Lebanon, Ohio, officiating, with burial in the cemetery nearby.She was born in Johnson County, North Carolina 1 January 1811, the eldest child of seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rains, only two of the children are still living:Mrs. Jane Longley of Princeton, NC and Mrs. Elizabeth Phillips of Dillon, Montana.At the age of 21, Eliza was married to Richard Pearce in 1832.Shortly after their marriage they took up residence in Tennessee.After living there one year, they moved to Saline County, Illinois, where they lived ten years and then came to Benton, Illinois.After here a few years they went to Jefferson County, where they resided for six years before returning to Franklin County, settling near the present home of J J Pearce. Mr. Pearce died in 1866 (another article states he died in 1886).Since that time Mrs. Pearce has lived with her son, J J.Only three of her children are living, namely W C and J J Pearce and Mrs. Mary E Campbell.
