BENTON -- William "Buck" Andrew Morris, 92, of Glen Carbon, formerly of Benton, died at 4:43 a.m. Saturday, March 29, 2014, in Eden Village Care Center in Glen Carbon. He was born June 30, 1921, in Equality, to the late Charles Benjamin and Rhoda (Williams) Morris. On Dec. 28, 1948, he and Emma Ernestine "Ernie" Kimmel were married in Harrisburg. She survives in Glen Carbon. Buck was a proud World War II U.S. Navy veteran. Upon his return from the war, he taught agriculture to other returning GIs. He retired from the Franklin County Soil Conservation District in 1987 after 32 years of service. He was an active member of his community, serving on the Benton Booster Club and participated in the Soil Conservation Service Retirees group. He was an avid sports fan. He was also a life member of the VFW and SIU Alumni Association. During his career, he was instrumental in the building of Rend Lake and tree selection. Buck and his wife took a trip sponsored by Rend Lake College to Washington D.C. where he was able to honor fellow veterans by laying the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. In addition to his wife of 65 years, he is survived by, two daughters and a son-in-law, Debra and Bill Fleming of Appleton, Wis. and Rhoda Gail Morris of Tucson, Ariz.; three grandchildren, Ashlee (Brian) Hawley, Billy and Levi Fleming; and two great-grandchildren, Camdon Fleming and Carter Hawley. He was preceded in death by his parents; and five sisters. The family will have a celebration of life service at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2014, in First Baptist Church in Benton, with the Rev. Mark Minor officiating. Private burial will be at the Benton Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.
