MEREDITH WADDELL FUNERAL HOME, Herrin, IL - April 5, 2015 http://www.meredithwaddell.com/memsol.cgi?user_id=1554685 On April 3, 2015, surrounded by her family, Evelyn Jeanne Overturf went home to be with the Lord. Evelyn was born April 18, 1921 to Anna M. (Pierce) and George A. Gulliver of Osage, Iowa. She had five siblings, Ruth, Lloyd, Laura, Edna and Helen. Evelyn served in the U. S. Navy during World War II at Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, where she met her husband of 59 years, Clarence M. Overturf of Buckner. They were married on December 27, 1946 in Morganfield, KY. Evelyn was a retired LPN from the Herrin Hospital where she worked for 23 years. She enjoyed meeting with the Herrin Hospital Retirees Group each month. She was a faithful and active member of the First Baptist Church of Energy for 56 years and also volunteered at the Herrin Community Pantry. Evelyn was always quick with a kind word and a helping hand. No one could make apple butter, sugar cookies, carrot cake, pickles or spaghetti like her. She enjoyed the outdoors, sewing, reading, playing games and most of all her family. Evelyn had a loving and devoted family: son, Greg Overturf and his family, daughter, Andrea & Bill Turner and children, Madison and Hudson; son, Gregory and Ashley Overturf and children, Kendall, Gabrielle and Paxton; daughter, Ashley and Jose Valdez and children, Michael and Jace; daughter, Katie Overturf and Zack Self and daughter, Athena. Son, Mark and Brenda Overturf and his family, daughter, Gayla Litton and Mark Grant and children, Andrew Leighton and his children, Steven and Conner; Nikki and Lexie Litton; son, Mark S. and Kristal Overturf and children, Bailey and Camden; step-son, Trevor Wolaver and children, McKenzie and Hailey and step-son, Richey Wolaver. Daughter, Joanna Gurley and her family, daughter, Lori and Mike Smoot and children, Payton and Jaden; son, Bret Gurley; son, Ryan and Julie Gurley and son, James and an "adopted" granddaughter, Dayana Uribe. Daughter, Julia "Jill" and Mark Redfearn and her family, son, Brad and Riki Redfearn and children, Phoenix and Atticus; daughter, Jaime and Donald Bacon and children, Davin, Kelsey and Ryann; "adopted" grandchildren, Austin, Chloe and Pierce Martin. and many special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; siblings and a daughter-in-law, Sherry (Gulley) Overturf. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 8, 2015 at the First Baptist Church in Energy with Rev. John Yeo officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the church. Interment will military graveside rites conducted by the Christopher American Legion Post and the IL Army National Guard Honor Detail will be in Smith Cemetery at Buckner. The family prefers memorial donations made to the First Baptist Church of Energy Building Fund; envelopes will be available at the church.
