M.C. Odle Jr., 97, of West Frankfort passed away at 1:16 p.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015 in the Herrin Hospital. Marion Columbus Jr. was born at 100 N. Odle Street in West Frankfort on November 11, 1917 the son of Marion Columbus Sr. and Maude (Holmes) Odle. M.C. began to paint food prices on the sidewalks and windows of a grocery store in the heights. He continued painting signs until Christmas of 2014. His signs were all over West Frankfort when he (and West Frankfort) were in their prime. M.C. married Rose Teauge on December 27, 1941 and she preceded him in death on March 26, 2005. M.C. was a veteran of the Army Air Corps stationed in the area where Disney built his fabulous theme park. Due to M.C's loss of Hearing in one ear, he was not sent overseas. He did paint names and Pictures on Bombers that were sent overseas to fight. After his military service M.C. came home to his wife and son, Roger. He began working at the A&P Grocery Store on Main Street. He won many promotional contests with his displays at the store. Wednesday evenings were devoted to Harold Wade's Market Basket signs. M.C's career as a sign painter really took off after he retired. M.C. served as president of the Tower Heights Cemetery Assoc. for 35 years. He was the Oldest living member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in West Frankfort. Survivors include his son, Roger (Brenda) Odle of West Frankfort; grandchildren, Lori (Kevin) Wilson of West Frankfort, Chris Odle of Belleville and Andy Odle (Fiancé Amy) of Zeigler; great grandchildren, Lucas, Brock, Amelia, Greg and Tripp. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rose; three sisters, Marie, Clara and Elizabeth and two infant sibling. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2015 in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Burial will be in the Tower Heights Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tower Heights Cemetery Association and will be accepted at the funeral home.
