Lorraine R. Kachelhoffer, 98, of Marion passed away at 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2015 in the Parkway Manor in Marion. She was born October 2, 1916 in West Frankfort to Fred and Daisy (Pritchard) Read. She married Victor Kachelhoffer on June 28, 1955 in Bloomington, IL. and he preceded her in death on December 20, 2010. Survivors include her son, John and daughter in law, Christine of Marion; three step-grandchildren, Joshua, Hayley, and Allison; two sisters, Wilma Plumlee of Pinckneyville and Betty Wharry of Nashville, also surviving are three nieces and six nephews, Steve Plumlee, Mike Plumlee, Maryann Andrews, Joan Brown, Bruce Wharry, Roger Elwell, Jim Elwell, Tom Read, Susan Read, also numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three sisters, and a brother. Lorraine graduated from SIU Teachers College and taught in a one room school house in Thompsonville, IL. She then found a job with Braniff Airlines and worked in Dallas, TX and South America, travelling extensively. During WWII she moved to Seattle, WA and worked for Boeing on the assembly line for the B29 Superfortress installing the radio gear and electronics. After the war she returned to Illinois and resumed her teaching career with the Rantoul, IL school district. She met her husband Victor who worked at the Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, and was married June 28, 1955. They had a child, John, one year later. After retirement she and Victor travelled extensively, spending many winters in Arizona together. Lorraine loved her family dearly, she will be missed. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 25, 2015 in the McCann Cemetery near Thompsonville with Pastor Marlin Otte officiating. Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery.
