Marvin C. Smothers, 77, of Benton, IL, died at 8:04 p.m., Monday, January 5, 2015, at his home. He was born on January 3, 1938, in West City, IL, the son of Clyde and Alene (Carney) Smothers. He married Carolyn Karnes and she preceded him in death. Mr. Smothers was a member of the United States Navy, serving in the Vietnam War. After his retirement from the Navy he worked at the V.A. Medical Center in Marion, IL in the housekeeping department. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, a step-son, Donnie Potts, two brothers, Ray Smothers and Jack Smothers. Surviving relatives include three step-sons, Larry Potts of Fayetteville, NC, Paul Potts and wife Laura of Benton, IL and Rodney Potts and wife Lilly of Hobart, IN, one step-daughter, Gerri Henderson of Hobart, IN, a brother, Gary Smothers of Tucson, AZ, one sister, Linda Peters of Benton, IL, 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 8, 2015 at Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home and Crematory, Benton, IL. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m., January 9, 2015 at the funeral home with Pastor Michael Kramer Officiating. Burial will follow services at the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton IL.
