Naomi E. Hayes, 84, died Friday morning, Jan. 16, 2015, at her son’s home in Kell, after a long illness. She was born Aug. 26, 1930, in Rend City. She was the daughter of Robert B. and Berenice E. (Johnson) Head. She married Billy R. Hayes June 2, 1948, in Ina. He preceded her in death on Dec. 15, 2007. She was a retired registered nurse having worked at Good Samaritan Hospital, Crossroads Hospital and White Oak Health Care Center in Mt. Vernon and VNA in Salem. She was also an employee of Bryan-Bennett Library in Salem and a decorator of wedding cakes. For many years she took opinion polls for Prairie Farmer Magazine. She was past regent of the Isaac Hull Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and a 4-H Club leader for 30 years. She is survived by two sons, Timothy E. Hayes and wife Kathy of Iuka and Shannon D. Hayes and wife Paula of Kell; two daughters, Susan K. Burgess and husband David of Salem and Amy C. Mathena and husband William J. of Kell; 12 grandchildren, Wendolyn Penn and husband the Rev. Travis of Nobelsville, Ind., Crystal Grove and husband Brian of Greenville, Jill Tilley and husband Dr. Robert of Pevely, Mo., Eric Hayes and wife Kari of Defiance, Mo., Kirk Hayes, Holly Hayes, Brad Hayes and Blake Hayes of Kell, Christina Carlson and husband Jacob of Bethalto, Caitlin Burroughs and husband Todd of Iuka and Branton Mathena and Callah Mathena of Kell; and 13 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Isaiah Penn of Nobelsville, Ind., Ryker, Cainan and Kinley Grove of Greenville, Claire, Anna Grace, Kate Naomi and Benjamin Hayes Tilley of Pevely, Mo., and Kira, Timothy Elias, Ella and Kenna Hayes of Defiance, Mo. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, James Robert Head; three sisters, Christina Head, Mary Etta Lawson and Carol Martin Henley; and one daughter, Sally Kay Hayes. She was a member of Ina Free Will Baptist Church, Ina and attended Pleasant View Free Will Baptist Church, Walnut Hill, for many years. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Johnston Funeral Home, Ina. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Johnston Funeral Home in Ina with the Rev. Travis Penn officiating, friends may call after 10 a.m. until the time of service.
