Mt. Vernon Register-News, Mt. Vernon, IL Posted: Monday, March 30, 2015 6:00 am William Ray "Bill" Derry, 68, of Mt. Vernon, passed away 2:02 p.m. Friday, March 27, 2015, at the Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. William was born Aug. 15, 1946, in Mt. Vernon, the son of Lester Earl and Laura Virgene (Richardson) Derry. He married Brenda Carter on April 13, 1974, in Mt. Vernon and she survives in Mt. Vernon. Mr. Derry served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Purple Heart. Bill worked as a dispatcher at Guaranteed Air Freight until his retirement. Bill was a fan of Cardinal baseball, Rams football and Blues hockey. He enjoyed fishing and golfing. Bill is survived by his wife, Brenda Derry of Mt. Vernon; two sons, Brandon Derry and wife April of Mt. Vernon and Jason Derry and wife Tricia of St. Louis; daughter, Jennifer Haynes and husband James of Falls Church, Va.; stepson, Brett Marlow of Mt. Vernon; two brothers, Ron Derry and wife Donna of Groves, Texas and Scott Derry of Mt. Vernon; two sisters, Donna Shelton and husband Ray of Mt. Vernon and Susan Summers and husband Brian of Benton; and also 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside funeral services for William Ray Derry will be held 10 a.m. today at Mt. Vernon Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Woodlawn with the Rev. Brian Summers officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 141. Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday at the Newell Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
