George Albert Michalic, 96, died at 6:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, in Marion V.A. Medical Center. He was born June 4, 1918, in Littleton, Pennsylvania, to Joseph and Josephine (Cwiakala) Michalic. He married the former Agnes Mekota in West Frankfort on June 27, 1953, and she survives.Mr. Michalic was a loving husband, father, uncle and friend. He was a longtime member of St. John’s Catholic Church in West Frankfort, a St. John’s trustee and member of the Building Committee. He also was a member of Civilian Conservation Corps.Mr. Michalic was a World War II Navy veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor. He also was an avid fisherman and hunter.Survivors include his wife, Agnes Michalic of West Frankfort; son, Mark and wife, Vivian, Michalic of Arlington, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Andy Michalic; and sisters: Rose Paluch and Mary Shannon.Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, in St. John’s Catholic Church in West Frankfort with the Rev. Dr. Eusebius Mbidoaka officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Military rites will be observed at 5:30 p.m. by VFW Post 5764 of West Frankfort and American Legion Post 1961 of Orient
