    2.   Walter Underwood 72, passed away into the hands of our Lord on Thursday February 26, 2015 at 4:30 A.M. from stomach cancer. He was born December 23, 1942 in Derby, OH to the late William B. and Minnie E. (Fast) Underwood. He leaves behind his loving wife of 23 years Wanda (Behm) Underwood, five children John Harold Underwood, David Allen Underwood, and Teresa Jett all of Ohio, Jacob Walter Underwood of Christopher, and Joshua Lee Underwood of Christopher. Grandchildren Nicole, Danny, Bradley, and Bethany. Also one loyal sister Sue “Virginia” Jahn and her husband Lester of Harrisburg, OH, and two sisters-in-law Ella Underwood and Linda Underwood of Ohio. Father-in-law John Behm of Valier, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. And special friends Jerry and Betty of Christopher. Walter was a Vietnam veteran of the Marine Corp. He was retired from the Grove City Ohio Police Department. He was also a member of the Valier United Methodist Church. Walter will be remembered as a devoted and loving father and husband. He was preceded in death by five brothers Emery, Carl, Harry, Bill, and Jim, and one sister Betty. Funeral services will be on Sunday March 1, 2015 at 1:00 P.M. with Brother Bert Mitchell officiating. Visitation will be on Sunday March 1, 2015 from 11:00 A.M. until the time of the service at 1:00 P.M. Burial will be in the Zeigler City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or to Hospice of Southern Illinois and will be accepted at the funeral home.

    2.   Troy Allen Cockrum, 94, of Sesser, died Feb. 26, 2015, at Parkway Manor Nursing Home in Marion.  He was born Jan. 31, 1921, in Sesser, the son of James Cockrum and Amelia (Williams) Cockrum. He married Marion (Fiordo) Cockrum and she preceded him in death on March 7, 1998. He was the owner and trainer of thoroughbred race horses and was appointed by Governor Stratton as a game warden. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Sesser Masonic Lodge. He is survived by daughter, Carolyn and Larry Manker of Sesser; grandchildren, Todd and Beth Manker of Sesser and Eric and Suzy Manker of Sparta; and four great-granddaughters, Skylar Manker, Peyton Manker and Rylie Manker, all of Sparta and Shaylee Manker of Sesser. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters and six brothers. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser with Pastor Jay Kelly and Brother Mark Miller officiating. Burial will be at Franklin Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Masonic Children’s Home and will be accepted at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with Brother Dennis Jones and the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Mrs. Patchett was born June 6, 1908, in Carbon Hill, Ala., the daughter of David and Alice Hill Pruett. She married Frank Scalet who preceded her in death on March 9, 1967. She married Edmund Patchett who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1979. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Christopher. Mrs. Patchett was a member of the Benton chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, the VFW Ladies Auxiliary in Sesser and the Christopher Senior Citizens. She is survived by three sons, Richard and Theris Scalet, Mattoon, Terry and Mary Ennis Patchett , Mulkeytown, and Marty and Saundra Patchett , Sesser; 12 grandchildren, Michael and Brenda Beavers, Mattoon, Jackie Sharp, Lerna, Ill., Wayne Scalet, Bethany, Ill., Ron Scalet, Carbondale, Frank and Linda Scalet, Warsaw, Ind., Matt and Julie Patchett , Mulkeytown, Mike and Mary Ann Patchett , Christopher, Beth and Terry Russell, Mulkeytown, Jeff Patchett , Oblong, Lindy Patchett , Valier, Tracy and Kent Dailey, O'Fallon, Mo., and Brad and Abbie Miller; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; several very special nieces and nephews and numerous friends.

Burial will be Willowrest Cemetery in Carterville. Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Lance was born on June 13, 1962, in Herrin, to James C. and Deloris C. (Loyd) Priddy. He is survived by his parents; Jim and Chris Priddy of Herrin; son, Darren and Mistie Priddy and their son, Brantley Allan Priddy, of Herrin; sisters, Beverly (Steve) Frey of Marion, Carol Renee Ingram-Priddy (Kathy) of Killeen, TX and Jessica Nicole (John) DeVore of Clinton, IL; brother, Rex (Anissa) Priddy of Goreville; his soul mate and partner, Mary Frey of Benton and her family; step-children; step-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of special friends. Lance enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. Lance was a talented cook and most known for his skills in the kitchen especially his famous sweet potato pies, Italian beef, hot wings and Cajun style food.

    2.   Thomas Michael "Tom" Neal, age 56, of Springfield, IL passed away Friday, February 27 at his home in Springfield, IL. Tom was a graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale and worked as an engineering technician for the Springfield, Illinois Department of Public Works.  He was a nature enthusiast who enjoyed the outdoors and a member of First Baptist Church in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Funeral Service will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois with Mr. Randy Sells presiding.  Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M.     2.   Jacqueline Jane Harper Hoffmann, 80, of West Frankfort, Illinois passed away at 5:05 p.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at her residence from lung cancer after a long illness. She was born December 1, 1934 in Little Valley, New York to Herriott Hamlin and Tella Rose (Miley) Harper. Jackie was the youngest of seven brothers and sisters, all preceded her in death. She married Don Hoffmann 31 years ago (1984) in Shreveport, Louisiana. Survivors include her husband, Don Hoffmann of West Frankfort, Illinois; son, Jeff (Deborah) Flagg of Shreveport, Louisiana; daughters, Koni Leavitt of Shreveport, Louisiana, Lori (Robin) Tatham of West Frankfort, Illinois; two step daughters, Donna (Robert) Batten of Phil Campbell, Alabama and Debra (Carnie) Burcham of Keatchi, Louisiana; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren. She was a 4H Leader, she finished her high school education in Shreveport, Louisiana, also graduating from a real estate school and an 18 wheeler truck driving academy even though she only weighed 98 pounds at the time. As a teenager she was an excellent ice skater and skated daily behind her home, she loved to do hobbies such as painting on canvas and glass, Ceramics and sewing and teaching others to do so. She loved animals and horseback riding. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Little Valley and a Sunday school teacher. It was her wish to be cremated there will be no visitation or services.     2.   | Ernest “Paul” West passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2015 surrounded by his loved ones. Paul was born the youngest of five children on March 4, 1943 in Cairo, Illinois to Loyie Elvis and Flossie Mae Lessar West. Paul married Brenda Kay Jones on March 6, 1965 in South Elgin, Illinois.  Paul had two sons, Curtis and Joshua. Throughout the 1960s and mid ‘70s, Paul was one of the foremost fast-pitch softball pitchers in Illinois.  He was sought by teams throughout the state.  He was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed shooting. Paul is survived by his wife, Brenda; his two sons Curtis (Terri) West, Joshua (Valerie) West; six grandchildren: Helen, Audra, Andrew, Noah, Nathan, and JoshLynn.  His is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Awaiting Paul in Heaven, were his parents, Loyie and Flossie; sisters, Reba (Jesse) White, Betty (David) Hutchison; brothers, Dean (Geraldine) West, and Charles West; nephew, Kenny Miller. Graveside services will be held at 1:00p.m. on Saturday, February 28, 2015 at St. John’s Cemetery in Dongola, Illinois with Brother Mike Cash officiating.  There will be no visitation.  Friends are asked to meet at the cemetery prior to the funeral service.  Union Funeral Home – West Frankfort, Illinois is in charge of arrangements.  | | | Increase

    2.   Leon A. Blaszczynski, 90, of Benton, IL, died 1:30 a.m., Wednesday, February 25, 2015, at his residence. Leon was born on April 9, 1924, in Benton, the son of Victor & Helen (Gostowski) Blaszczynski. He married the former Alice Thompson on September 23, 1950 and she survives. Mr. Blaszczynski served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He was then drafted into the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the carpenters union and worked in the mining industry. He enjoyed crappie fishing, wood working as a master carpenter, bowling and visiting with his friends at Hardee’s. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Mitchell Blaszczynski, Theodore Blaszczynski and Carl Blaszczynski and three sisters, Josephine Blaszczynski, Francis Yezerski and Rozelia (Rose) Halupka. Surviving relatives include his wife Alice, one brother, Vincent Blaszczynski and lots of loving nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Benton IL. Funeral Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, February 28, 2015, at the church with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. Burial will follow services at Tower Heights Cemetery, West Frankfort, IL with military rites by the Benton American Legion Post 280, VFW Post 2671 and the National Guard Honors Team. Memorial contributions may be made to the Hospice of Southern Illinois.

    2.   Harold "Dean" Rogers, age 74, of Owosso, Michigan passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2015 at his home. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, February 21, 2015 at Salem Lutheran Church with Pastor James Bare officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Friday from 2 pm to 8 pm. Harold was born September 13, 1940 in West Frankfort, the son of Harry and Marie (Dixon) Rogers. He graduated from West Frankfort High School and was a member of Salem Lutheran Church and U.A.W. Local 659. Harold enjoyed fishing and hunting; especially duck hunting. He loved horses and was a hobby farmer. Harold looked forward to time with his family at the cabin. He married Bonny Rogers at Salem Lutheran Church on October 27, 1962. Harold retired from General Motors after 37 1/2 years of service. He is survived by his wife Bonny; daughters Kimberly (Thomas) Renwick and Kelly (Amos) Knapp; grandchildren Thomas Renwick, Alyssa Renwick and Matthew Renwick and Cody (Caitlyn) Knapp and Samantha Knapp; great-grandchildren Conner Knapp; brother Robert (Sue) Rogers; sister Gayla (Mike) Mondino; brother and sister-in-laws William (Marcia) Collard, Joyce Collard, Robert Collard, David Collard, Margo Rust, Gregory (Donna) Collard, Rebecca (Wayne) Maybaugh; many nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends.
