    1. Re: [ILFRANKL] Autosomal DNA question
    2. Since this subject has come up again, I am curious if any of you are familiar with a DNA test that women can take that can be useful for genealogy purposes, namely the Family Finder test at Family Tree DNA. It is an autosomal test that identifies strands of DNA from all your ancestors for about 5 generations back. If you have some matches that indicate a relationship, then you can compare ancestral surnames to see where it is likely you share a common ancestor. Note that the results are limited to the Family Finder database, which currently is much smaller than the yDNA database. I know that results are 'stronger' through the male line, but I have none available to test so this seems like my best bet, IF it is worth the money. Please share with me/us your thoughts/experiences. Kay In a message dated 2/28/2013 1:06:32 P.M. Central Standard Time, Julia.Schroeder@jalc.edu writes: Yes I have Sheldon. 3. Kay   I have had Y-DNA testing (FTDNA) but plan to get autosomal testing from 23andme.  23andme has drastically lowered their price.  Further, you can have your results converted to FTDNA's Family Finder and the total is still less than the FTDNA price for Family Finder.   For a comparison of providers see http://www.isogg.org/wiki/Autosomal_DNA_testing_comparison_chart   As to the usefulness of the testing, as usual, it depends.  The critical factor is the willingness of participants to share their family data.  This varies widely, but FTDNA seems to attract more people with a serious interest in genealogy, so it might be worth getting into the Family Finder database.  As I recall, a number of people have reported getting a better response rate through Family Finder than through either Ancestry or 23andme.   -- Roger Ray

    2. Roger Ray
    3. Bob notes: Jane's mother was called Winnie for Winniford and her grandmother was called Hannah for Johanna, but both would have been dead by the time frame mentioned in the article.   --------------------   Johanna Rea (wife of James Rea Henry Co VA) is certainly deceased by 1795 [cf. Henry Co DB V:199-200], but I've not found evidence of the death of Winnifred Rea [wife of William Collin(g)s Rea] so I'm not sure she has died by 1830. Instead, the scenario I'm contemplating is one in which both Thomas Ray and Hannah Ray are both children of Wm Collins  & Winnifred Rea.  There are some very interesting similarities between these Marion Co TN Ray families and a number of Reas who appeared in FCI sometime ~1840 or so.  [I'll have to write a separate post with a better subject line to elaborate on this idea.]
