ENERGY - Valgene Gould, 84, a native of Johnson County, passed away at 2:10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, in Herrin Hospital. Valgene was born May 16, 1928, in Johnson County Illinois. He was the son of Audis L. and Faye (Newton) Gould. Valgene was united in marriage to Gertrude "GiGi" Johnson on Dec. 9, 1946, in Johnson County Courthouse in Vienna. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Brenda Rea and her husband, Robert, of Benton; a son, D. Michael Gould and his wife, Jody of Energy; three grandchildren, Michael "Cole" Gould and his wife, Lesley, of Energy, Scarlett Rea Lyons and her husband, Kenny of Florence, Ala., and Hilary Rea Remm and her husband, Paul, of Benton; and five great-grandchildren, Adeline and Emmalise Lyons, Sarah Hope Lyons, Ariadne Remm and Teresa Pender. In addition to his parents, Valgene was preceded in death by an infant grandson, Robert Jefferson Rea; two brothers, J.D. Gould and Robert J. Gould and an infant brother. Valgene attended the Tall Tree Grade School and the Vienna High School. Valgene had a strong work ethic and he is remembered by his family for being paid at the age of nine years the same wage as his father, Audis, when he assisted neighbors with farm work. Valgene served in the U.S. Army. Following his honorable discharge, Valgene worked in area ordnance plants as a welder. He later was em-ployed by Knutt Aronson, a general contractor, and worked on a number of building projects including the construction of the Herrin Swimming Pool. Valgene became a general contractor and was an Illinois licensed plumber. He developed Gould Subdivision and later built and operated the Green Acres Golf Course at Energy. Valgene, along with his family, operated the course until his retirement and sale of the course in 2004. Valgene loved the game of golf and was a member of the Southern Illinois Golf Association. Over the years, he sponsored numerous sports teams and particularly enjoyed supporting and participating in various bowling leagues. Valgene loved to travel and loved motorcycling. He was a dedicated "Ford" man and approved of any piece of equipment that bore a Ford label. Valgene was a devoted Christian and had a deep faith in God. He and his family were charter members, along with Mildred Hindman Phegley and her family, of the Herrin Church of Christ. Valgene oversaw the construction of the original church building in the early 1960's. Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in Herrin Church of Christ. Interment will be in Vienna Fraternal Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the Beggs-Gurley VFW Post 5222 and the Illinois National Guard Burial Honors Detail. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Herrin Church of Christ, 3101 S. Park Ave., Herrin, IL 62948. Roy SWEETIN was a half brother to my father-in-law, William Robert MONTGOMERY. One of Gwendolyn's sisters still lives in the Benton area, but is not well. Mary A. Wiley, 85, of Palm Desert, Calif., formerly of Mt. Vernon, died 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at Oasis Healthcare Center in LaQuinta, Calif. She was born Tuesday, Dec. 20, 1927, in Erie, the daughter of Elmer Tanner and Ruth Etta (Williams) Border. She married John B. Wiley in West Covina, Calif. in May of 1964. He preceded her in death in May 1986. Mary worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for a car dealership. She was a member of Herbs for Health and Fun Club and was of the Catholic faith. She is survived by her friend, Phyles Cox of Mt. Vernon; three nephews, John Meeks of California, Mark Meeks of California and Edward David Border of Manhattan, Mont.; two great-nieces, Brittney and Katlyn Border of California; and great-nephew, David Tanner Border of Manhattan, Mont. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Edna Maxine Border; brother, Howard E. Border; aunt, Hattie Harshbarger; and one uncle and his wife, Herbert Page and Eva. John Russell Boozer, 86, of West Frankfort went to be with the Lord at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday March 19, 2013, at the Herrin Hospital. He was born December 26, 1926 in West Frankfort the son of John Russell and Ida Mae (Thompson) Boozer. He married Juanita Beavers from West Frankfort, in 1946 and she was his loving companion for 66 years, they have two children Gary and Debbie. He served his country in the United States Navy. He attended Faith Assembly Fellowship in West Frankfort, for many years. He had a good sense of humor, loved to fish and travel. He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita; son, Gary (Nancy) Boozer of Las Vegas NV.; daughter, Deborah (Jim) Hasten of St Charles MO.; grandson, Mike Boozer, grandson, James Hasten and granddaughter, Stacey (Luke) Brown; great-grandsons, Evan Boozer and Lance Brown; sister, Daisy Biggs of Centralia, Il; brother-in-law, Jerry (Kathryn) Odle of West Frankfort, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and seven sisters. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Friday, March 22, 2013 at the Parker Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Revs. Gary Brown and Gene Cowsert officiating. He worked at many jobs, owned a restaurant, had a rock quarry, owned several homes in Murphysboro and then he moved to Missouri with his family and there he met Mary Ellen HART and they were married. Also on the married records, it says that this is his second marriage. He could not read or write, but could speak English. He died of Heart problems. He and Mary Ellen were married 11-18-1886 in Fountain Bluff, Illinois She was born 5-4-1870, Ironton, Reynolds County, Missouri and died on 12-27-1932 in Murphysboro, Jackson County, Illinois. When they came to the Ferry on the Mississippi River, the Ferry operator was going to charge Mary 50 cents to take her cow across the river and she would not pay, so the cow had to swim across. Her children went to Arkansas with her. He son Jack married Allie Williams in Arkansas and where she also died. It is not know where Mary Ann met her second husband, who was suppose to be a brother of Riley, but is possible, when Wm Sanford WILLIAMS went to Arkansas in the late 60’s, with his third wife Mary Jane and several of their children, that one of the children, was from a previous marriage may have already been there or went with him and stayed there or then Mary Ann could have met him in Arkansas.
(12) THOMAS PINCKNEY WILLIAMS, born April 14, 1859 in Blairsville, Williamson County, Illinois and died in Benton, Franklin County, Illinois on Feb 10, 1943. “TP” as he was called. He was widower by the time he had died and the cause of his death was Cerebral Heomorhage (one week) as reported by Dr. W. H. ALVIS of Benton. He was buried in M&OF Cemetery in Benton. He was a quite, tall and slender man but had a temper, expressed in vocal rage. He was good with his hands, and was listed as a merchant and carpenter. Good with tools and made violins , chairs, tables and chairs mostly from Walnut wood, even made a wheel chair for his wife. It is said that many of this family were good singers and were very dedicated to Camp Meetings. He married Tennessee Elizabeth KELLEY on 12-24-1880 in Jefferson County, Illinois and she was born in Tennessee on 1-29-1862 and died on 8-16-1939 in Benton, Franklin County, Illinois from a stroke (had ten years prior) and she is also buried at M&OF Cemetery in Benton. She was called “Tennie”. They lived in Benton on North McLeansboro St, just one black North of the High School Athletic field Following her stroke, that she endured for about 8 eyars, was taken care of by an orphaned granddaughter, Mary MIDYETT, who she and her husband raised after the death of her parents. She had the same Dr that her husband did and the informant was Paul WILLIAMS of Benton, Illinois They had the following Children: Alvie WILLIAMS Minnie WILLIAMS Rella WILLIAMS Allie “Chub” WILLIAMS Paul WILLIAMS. Mazie WILLIAMS Homer WILLIAMS Obed “Obe” WILLIAMS Pricilla “Dutch” WILLIAMS (14) DICEY P. WILLIAMS was born 1866 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Her family have always suspected foul play in her death. He daughter Ethyl was always secretive about who her mother was and the circumstances surrounding her death. She married Benjamin Franklin BOOK on 1-31-1886 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He was born 7-23-1861 in Jefferson County, Illinois and died 5-27-1942 in Washington and was buried there. Benjamin was a carpenter and lived in Illinois, Oklahoma and Washington They had the following children: Etha S. BOOK

— Paul Fradenburg, 63, of Mt. Vernon, passed away at 10:30 p.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. He was born in Evansville, Ind. on April 7, 1949, the son of Sarah Fradenburg. Mr. Fradenburg is survived by his daughter, Stacy Fradenburg of Aubrey, Texas; aunt, Mary Hostlaw of Sandoval; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his mother. Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with Brother David Shores officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Catherine Cemetery in Woodlawn. Visitation will be after 12:30 p.m. on Friday at the Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.—

WEST FRANKFORT - William Jay Shaw, infant, died at 12:10 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2013, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born to Matt and Erin (Palmer) Shaw on March 18, 2013, in Carbondale. William is survived by his parents, Matt and Erin Shaw of West Frankfort; two big brothers, Reese Aaron Shaw and Logan Alexander Shaw of West Frankfort; maternal grandparents, Richard and Mary Palmer of Marion; paternal grandparents, Howard and Margaret Shaw of Amboy; maternal great-grandfather, Richard Bell of Mount Prospect; maternal great-grandmother, Patricia Palmer of O'Fallon; and paternal great-grandmother, Rose Coss of Amboy; numerous aunts and uncles; other relatives; and friends. He was preceded in death by his maternal great-grandmother, Amy Bell; maternal great-grandfather, Paul Palmer; and paternal great-grandfather, Jay Coss. Services for William Jay Shaw will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 21, in Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, with Pastor Russell Warner officiating.
