I can add specifics as for Margaret HUGHES SIMPSON (I have her husband as Eddie Simpson, but now info for him). Margaret was born February 22, 1925 and died January 25, 1998. I do not have a source for this info, but it could very well have been from Marie Linn. More info___ I talked to her a long time ago and I can't remember now if she said she lived in the old Hughes home or the old Linn home-- Benton woman dies in house fire By Mona Sandefur Mar. 20, 2013 2:24 pm Firefighters from several area districts responded to the scene of a massive house fire Wednesday morning at 11566 Linn Rd., Benton, just south of West City. Benton -- A Benton woman died Wednesday morning in a house fire. Franklin County Coroner Marty P. Leffler said he was notified at 10:05 a.m. Wednesday by the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room of a woman found unresponsive in a residential fire located at 11566 Linn Road just south of the city limits of Benton. Leffler said the woman, identified as Dorothy Marie Linn, 99, was pronounced as deceased by the ER doctor at 9:55 a.m. Leffler said authorities received a 9111 call at 8:48 a.m. by a neighbor who saw smoke coming from the residence. Franklin County Sheriff’s Department deputies, along with Benton and West City Fire Departments, initially responded, and mutual-aid arrived from West Frankfort, Sesser, Buckner, Christopher and Coello fire departments. Firefighters and deputies forced entry into the home and located the unresponsive Linn near the southeast entry of the home. Leffler said CPR was started until ambulance personnel arrived and transported the victim to the Franklin Hospital in Benton. “Emergency room personnel took over life saving measures, but never received any vital signs of life,” he said. “Mrs. Dorothy Marie Linn was pronounced deceased at 9:55 a.m. Leffler said that a blood sample was drawn and the Franklin Hospital Lab performed carbon monoxide testing on the sample. He said the results came back positive for a lethal range of carbon monoxide. “After x-rays were performed and consultation with a forensic pathologist, the cause of death is from asphyxiation due to smoke inhalation due to a residential fire,” Leffler said. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Linn are pending with the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home of Benton. Leffler ask that you keep this family in your prayers. Julia D. Schroeder, Ph. I received this tip from Sydni (Thurmond) Hamill on our Thurman DNA project list and thought it was worth passing on. I was unaware of these original document scans that you could "find". If you already knew this, just delete this message: Recently I discovered a new way to find online scans of original documents. So far, I've used it to locate some Confederate pension applications, a San Francisco coroner's report, and...I've browsed through the historic Draper Manuscripts which recount details of early 19th century America (and an unmined treasure trove of family history...not a lot of Thurmans though) Familysearch.org has a large collection of images which are not yet indexed but can be "hand searched" page by page. Tedious work but well worth the effort. These images do not appear in their Collections list. I've found them by chance using google and keywords. Items may also be found by looking through the familysearch wiki if you know exactly what you're looking for: https://www.familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Main_Page Here's what you can try: 1. Enter the keyword "familysearch" in the google search box 2. Add a topic (like "Draper Manuscripts") or some keywords which describe a collection (like tennesse confederate pension) or the title of a book. 3. Click on any item in your google search hits which starts with "https//:familysearch" 4. This will direct you to a page with items in the familysearch catalog (online items as well as films you can order at a Family History Center) and links to other websites where information may be found (like the TSLA) 5. As you look through the list you may see items identfied as "images only". 6. Don't be daunted by the hyperlink "Browse 525,599 images" (that's actually a small collection!) Most are divided into groups - the TN pension applications are grouped by number - so if you know the pension application from an index, you can find the original with a little searching. I located the coroner's report I was seeking by using the date of death. 7. You may also find online records for a particular location by using the familysearch catog on their home search page https://www.familysearch.org/ or by using the same type of google search where you use "familysearch" and your location (like "Lincoln County Kentucky"). Google hits will take you to the familysearch "learn" page for that place. -- Sandy (Whalen) Bauer

This is very sad to hear...Marie is a second cousin once removed through my DAVIS line. I had several occasions to talk with her, the last being at my Mother's visitation in 1996. I will always remember her wonderful, kind personality.
