SCHELLER - Charles "Chuck" Skurat, 63, died April 2, 2013, at home. He was born Jan. 22, 1950, in Chicago to Charles and Bernice (Bennett) Skurat. Chuck married Glenna (Zettler) Skurat on April 13, 1968. Survivors include children, Jennifer and Randy Neff of West Frankfort and Chad and Diana Skurat of Scheller; grandchildren Mathew Skurat of Scheller and Zachary Skurat of Scheller; stepgrandchildren, Christina Neff, Elizabeth Neff and Michael Hurt, all of Du Quoin; four stepgreat-grandchildren; brother, Kevin Skurat of Herrin; and special friends, Tom and Mary Mansfield and Don and Carol Drysdale. He was preceded in death by his father. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, in Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with Pastor Ryan Harris and the Rev. Keith Filer officiating. Interment will be in Paradise Cemetery, west of Sesser. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser is in charge of arrangements. Never before has there been a man more loved and appreciated than this man, Chuck Skurat. A tremendous blessing to all of his family and many friends, he leaves a lasting mark on the hearts of all who knew him. Chuck was a devoted family man who was always there for his wife, children and grandchildren and faithfully cared for his parents in their elderly years. He loved the outdoors, enjoying hunting, fishing, and practicing the art of taxidermy. He had artistic talent in drawing and writing. He was a "jack of all trades," able to remodel your home, repair your car or cook your breakfast. Anyone who knew Chuck, knows he had a great sense of humor, which kept everyone around him happy and laughing. Friends and family alike have often called upon his wise counsel for Godly advice during life's trials or to simply have a friend to listen to the cares of the heart. Chuck's greatest desire in life was to love God, love his family, and love people, which he did with great success. He had a servant's heart, evident by the efforts he made to help others. Upon return from a visit to skid row in Vancouver, Canada, his heart was moved with compassion and he began to distribute backpacks filled with blankets, food, water, and a Bible to anyone he found homeless here in Southern Illinois. Chuck was a founding member of Keet Waters Ministry, serving for seven years with his daughter, wife and son-in-law. He had a vital role in sharing God's Word and God's Love among Pacific Northwest Coast First Nations of British Columbia, Canada, and a small portion of southeast Alaska. This ministry would not be where it is today without his willingness to travel thousands of miles, his ability to break the ice with strangers, and his many, many prayers. His prayers live on - the seeds he has sown will continue to be watered. They will continue to grow and they will bring forth a harvest. Chuck was retired from Burlington Northern Railroad. He was a member of Faith Asssembly of God in Du Quoin, where he was a deacon for numerous years. He has run his race and finished the fight of faith, for now his eyes are beholding what he has lived for: His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Chuck will be greatly missed, warmly remembered, and always held dear in our hearts. Those who knew him will not say "goodbye," but instead, "See you later." In 2006 I set stones for me & my husband. Also had 5 stones fixed with new bases, top re-attached to base etc. at IOOF then went to next cemetery & had 2 more repaired. Sesser Monument did it and were very reasonable. They were also cheaper than Reynolds Monument. Few years ago my brother died & his wife wanted stone to match rest so she got info from me & called the branch in Mt. Vernon to do it. Dale, we have similar problems with some of the stones in the Logan Cemetery I have no idea where to start to see about having them repaired and/or set back up. You mentioned Reynolds Monument Co. Do you have any idea what they charge for these repairs? Jane -------Original Message------- From: Dale Ray Houseworth Date: 04/03/13 11:21:38 To: ilfrankl Subject: [ILFRANKL] Browning Hill Cemetery The Browning Hill Cemetery in Browning Township Franklin County has been cleaned up. One of three trees has been cut up and moved that had fell in the cemetery. Two other trees are on the list to be cleaned up. Several of the Tombstones are down. Smaller ones will be put back up over the summer. There will be someone mowing the cemetery every two weeks to keep it in good shape. There are a few large stones that are down. One being Moses Buckner. Contact has been made with the Reynolds Monument company about getting the large stones back up and fixed on there bases. Three of the large Hammond stones are leaning and are in need of being fixed also. Photos of all the stones will be taken and sent to Sandy Bauer to be placed online. We will also be searching for other stones that are under the ground Some of the small stones are broke into several parts. A lot of the stones have been moved around and are no where near where they are supposed to be. They will just be put back up in a row so that the can be preserved for the future. This is my dad's sister. She was a beautiful person and I loved to visit her. She moved into the Sullivan house on Election Street in Benton - her father-in-law was a postman in Benton and in the Diggins where she lived as a teenager. Her husband, Joe Sullivan owned a furniture store in Benton. Debbie V.
