Eldora, The name Hayes rang a bell for me.......there was a legal suit between Hayes and Borders in Sparta, IL. Hayes' home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. Hayes helped two slaves and their children escape to northern Illinois and Andrew Borders sued him for return of his property. Also......I personally think that Andrew Borders was the owner of Priscilla, who was purchased by Barzilla Silkwood. In the 1860 census for Franklin County, IL, Priscilla is listed as Priscilla Borders. Census records 1850-1860-1870-1880 have the birth place for Priscilla as Illinois. I checked for slave owners, surname Borders, in the 1830-1840 time frame, and Andrew Borders is the only man I could find. He was a slave owner. I believe the Silkwood Inn was referred to as the "Halfway House".....not because it was a stop on the Underground Railroad....but because it was halfway between Shawneetown and St Louis. By the way, I've done some research on Priscilla Silkwood and the hollyhock legend. Most of it is just NOT true, but southern Illinois is steeped in her story and you can't change the tradition. Sheila According to the book "Franklin Co IL 1818-1997" pg 18, Brazilla SILKWOOD was said to have been an ardent opponent of Slavery. The inn was known as the "halfway house". Jo Ann McGhee

Eldora, the book "Generations of Memories, A Pictorial History of Franklin Co IL", by Linda SETTLE (2000) has a photo of the Silkwood Inn on pg 62, The caption below the photo states that it was built on the Shawneetown/Kaskaskia Trail by Brazilla SILKWOOD in 1827, and now is restored and a museum, located near Mulkeytown IL. Will send you a scan privately. According to the book "Franklin Co IL 1818-1997" pg 18, Brazilla SILKWOOD was said to have been an ardent opponent of Slavery. The inn was known as the "halfway house". I am looking for a obituary for MARTHA LAVINA JONES who died March 31, 1938 at Christopher Illinois? Thanks , Dale
I found out that when the Rend City Mine was in operation that when a miners family had a child or baby to die they would lay the child to rest at Browning Hill. These folks never had any extra money so getting a marker for the baby or child just never happened.
