Obit: William Calvin GULLEY b. 21 June 1884, FCI – d. 21 Mar. 1944, bur. Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser, FCI Unnamed & undated newspaper. Probably the Sesser newspaper in Mar. 1944. “William Calvin GULLEY, was a son of James and Sarah King GULLEY. He was born in Franklin county, Illinois June 21, 1884. He was one of a family of five children, two died while very young children and one, a brother, Elza, died at the age of 14 years. The other, a sister, Julia, is now Mrs. Julia Hill PETERSON of Ina, Illinois. Cal, as he was known to his friends, and his sister Julia, were orphaned by the death of their father and just a few years later, the death of their mother, when he was fifteen years of age and his sister, Julia was ten. They were reared by their grandfather KING and other members of the family in the vicinity where Sesser is now located. Cal GULLEY was a descendant of two pioneer Franklin county families. His grandfather KING was one of the early settlers in this area, and was identified with the early development of this country and of southern Illinois. His grandfather GULLEY came to Illinois in the very early days of statehood from Tennessee. He was well and favorably known in those days and helped also in shaping the affairs of this area. Many members of these families, relatives of this man, are still active in this work at this time. On July 20, 1902 he married Emma STEVISON of this community who was also a member of a highly respected family. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. GULLEY all of whom survive him. They are: Ewell, a son, of Sesser; Sylvia, a daughter, who is the wife of Alva TAYLOR; Wanda, a daughter, who is the wife of Orval PIPER, both of Sesser; Mildred, a daughter, who is the wife of Raymond LANCE, and lives in Bakersfield, Calif.; and Kenneth, a son, who lives in Cicero, Illinois. He made the Good Confession and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church at White Oak, near Sesser, many years ago. Later he moved his membership to the Sesser Methodist Church. He was a faithful and dependable Christian man and was devoted to his church. Cal GULLEY was a good man. He was a loyal and loving husband and father, a good neighbor, and a dependable friend. He was one of those whom it can be truthfully said, ‘His word was as good as his bond.’ This writer knew him well through all the years and can testify to his integrity and to his fidelity to the tenents of Christianity and citizenship. Some months ago he became ill. He was taken to Marshall-Browning hospital and later transferred to the Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, where all that modern medical skill could do, was done to restore him to health. It was not to be. He continued to fail and at last the burdens of the flesh became too heavy and he died.” ****Source: Goode-Barren Hist/Gen. Soc. Sesser, FCI. Feb. 1995 newsletter. I am not giving up. just takes time to go probe the ground looking for tombstones. Thanks again for the information. Just one thing where is Robert Moore buried? Thanks, Dale ----- Original Message ----- Dale, I found a footnote in Martha Browning Jones Moore's probate that she married Robert Moore after the death of her husband Calvin Jones. Then found the following: January 1851: Bennett A Browning petitions the court to be granted Letters of Administration on the estate of Calvin Jones, deceased, proof of having been made of the death and special right given to the widow and creditor having elapsed. In October 1852 the widow Patsy Jones is now the wife of Robert Moore, and is allowed $143. Probate Book ABC. Conclusion: Martha Browning and Calvin Jones were not divorced. Here is the Phone # for the Frankfort Area Historical Museum 618-932-6159. I think they would really enjoy getting the old frame. They are only open on Wednesday and Thursday so give them a call TODAY. I think all the pieces re there. I was wanting to contact the Franklin County Historical Society to see if they wanted it, but I can't find a phone number for them. If anyone knows the phone number please let me know. Otherwise, if you know someone else who would want the frame and would treat it with respect I would be happy to give it to them.
