MARION - Alice F. Garris, 74, passed away at 7:50 a.m. Saturday, April 4, 2013, at home. Alice was born Aug. 19, 1938, in Trenton, Tenn., to James Richard and Juanita Jewel (Jones) McNeely. She married Carl Garris on Aug. 16, 1953 in Chicago. He survives in Marion. Alice was of Protestant faith and was a homemaker. She was a strong, independent person who loved her family, children and grandchildren above all else. James B. BUCKNER died Nov. 1881  25yrs  10days   Is listed as being buried at Browning Hill     However I have not been able to find a stone for him. But he does have a stone at the Harrison Cemetery.   So where is he buried for sure?   Thanks in advance for any help on him and or Joseph Hammons.   This project I have took on works on my migraines! I found Richard Ward Birkhead's bio in the "Facts and Folks of Jefferson County, IL" - 1978 - Jefferson County Historical Society, but there are some problems with the facts. He could not have been married in 1822 when he was born in 1818. His gravestone at Sugar Camp Cemetery, JCI clearly shows his birth date of 12 Jun 1818: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~iljeffer/iljeffe2/sugar_camp/south/MVC-175S.JPG Richard and 1st wife Mary are in 1850 JCI census with oldest child born about 1842 so I'm guessing they must have married about 1842 rather than 1822. Mary states she was born in Virginia about 1823 according to her age. That means when Richard married his 2nd wife Barbara Peavler, he was marry someone younger than his three oldest children. Bio: Richard Ward Birkhead came to Jefferson County from West Virginia in 1818. He was a direct descendant of Christopher Birkhead of Cheshire, England. He purchased land in Moore's Prairie Township; deeds show four acres for 25 cents, which was farmed and cleared for awhile with oxen. Later he owned 400 acres. On April 6, 1822 he married Mary Harshbarger. To this union, seven children were born. After her death he married Barbara Peavler. This marriage resulted in eight children: Elsie, m. James Riley Neal; Richard L.; Cora, m. James Neal; they moved to Benton where he worked in house moving and contracting; Nellie, m. William Blackwell; James farmed in Viola; Harry, farmed in Illinois and Colorado; William, farmed in Viola; Curtis, farmed in Prairie Twp. When Harry died, his brother James and wife, raised his two sons, Richard and Donald, who are still living. The children of Curtis Burkhead were: Franklin of Bonnie; Judson, of Springfield; Cona (deceased); Velma, in Mt. Vernon: Oral, in Steager, IL. Richard Birkhead donated two acres of land for the first school in the community, named Birkhead School, District 130. Register-News, Mt Vernon IL, Thurs 23 Sep 1993 JOHN SLAMANS John SLAMANS, 71, of Bonita Springs, Fla., formerly of Mt. Vernon and Elgin, died Aug. 7, 1993, at a hospital in Cape Coral, Fla. He was born in Oklahoma, a son of Will and Anna (GIFFORD) SLAMANS. Services were conducted Aug. 11, 1993 in Bonita Springs, Fla. Mr. SLAMAN is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, Ronald SLAMANS and Todd SLAMANS; one sister, Ella Faye McLAUGHLIN of Mt. Vernon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Alice Fern CLINTON SLAMANS, four brothers, Paul, Nelson, Ernest and Sam SLAMANS, and one sister, Fern THURNAU. Local arrangements were completed by the Johnston Funeral Home of Mt. Vernon.

Imogene Gaither, 85, of Thompsonville, passed away at 11:27 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at Frankfort Care Center. She was born in Akin, IL on Nov. 19, 1927, the daughter of Eliga and Anna (Johnson) Moore. She married John Lester Gaither on Feb. 8, 1944 and he preceded her in death on August 22, 2008. Mrs. Gaither is survived by four daughters, Brenda Sue McCollom and husband Rich, of Benton, Dixie Lee Heifner and husband Carlton, of Benton, Debra Jean Overturf, of Christopher and Donna Darlene Garmane and husband Michael, of Thompsonville. She is also survived by one sister, Mary Lou Johnson, of Benton and one brother, Paul Moore of Johnston City; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gaither was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, Len Moore and by six sisters, Irene McLain, Madge Moore, Pearline Moore, Velma Daily, Evelene Peterson and Margie Holland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 12 at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton with the Rev. Gilbert Evans officiating. Burial will be in the Plasters Grove Cemetery in Thompsonville. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. on Friday at Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.
