23 Dec 1951 ALVA LEFFLER, 72, OF THIS CITY, DIED SUNDAY IN HERRIN Alva Leffler [sic] 72, died at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Herrin hospital after a brief illness. Leffler had lived all his life in this community and for several years operated the Leffler hotel. His wife died last September. He is survived by a son, Roscoe of Two Rivers, Wis., and two daughters, Mrs. Earl Moore of Benton and Mrs. Leo Merkl of Chicago. The body is lying in state at the Walker funerl home. Funeral arrangements today were incomplete, awaiting arrival of the son from Wisconsin. 26 Dec 1951 Funeral rites for Alva Leffler, 72, who died Sunday afternoon, will be held at 10 o'clock Thursday morning at the First Church of God, with Rev. Patti was a wonderful homemaker with so much love for her home, family and community kids. She volunteered and contributed to the Salvation Army angel tree program, buying and wrapping gifts. She also was a volunteer babysitter for the kids in the neighborhood and the community. She had a special love for all the children she came in contact with. Patricia leaves behind two children, Cheryl Jean Rabbacci and Mackenzie Lynn Parshudie . Patti was the first of six children; two brothers, Jack Richards of Colorado, and Scott Allen Wohlgemuth, who preceded her in death; three sisters, Megan Richards of Elmhurst, Kaleigh Richards of Elmhurst and Rochelle Wohlgemuth of Johnston City. She was a step daughter to Kristine Richards of Elmhurst and Larry McEndree of Benton; beloved aunt to Jacki Lynn Richards, Jordan Lee Richards and Scott Allen Wohlgemuth. SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. John William Perles, 82, of Scottsdale, Ariz., died March 10, 2014. He was the son of John and Celeste Perles, loving husband of Priscilla Nelles Perles, John passed away on March 10 at Scottsdale Healthcare. He is survived by his sister, Violet Schultz; his wife of 55 years, Priscilla; six children, John Jr. (Sally), Jennifer Velitchkov (George), Karen McGuinness (Johnny), Susan Hayes (Wade), Julia Perles and Emily Strauss, (John). He is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A son of a coal miner, John enlisted in the USAF where he served in Korea. He later attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wisc., where he met his wife. John played both basketball and football while at Beloit. His career as director of operations began in Chicago where he worked for the Montgomery Ward Catalog House. The family moved to Naperville and then to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada where the youngest daughter, Emily, was born. John was Regional Operations Director for the T. Eaton Company. Positions with J. L. Hudson in Detroit, May Co. in Los Angeles and Broadway Southwest in Phoenix rounded out his career. His ‘retirement’ was spent helping build a family owned manufacturing business. His love of golf, fishing trips to Canada, road trips with his wife, visiting and reminiscing with friends, mentoring his grown children and doting on his grandchildren filled John’s final years with peace and joy. He will be missed. Rosary will be held from 10:30 to 11 a.m. with a memorial service at 11 a.m., Friday, March 14, 2014, at Hansen Desert Hills Chapel, 6500 E. Bell Rd. in Scottsdale, Ariz.. >

He was born in Benton on Sept. 27, 1943, son of Mona Powell and the late Eugene Summers. He graduated from Jacksonville University and was a Navy veteran. He was a member of Fruit Cove Baptist Church and a retired financial adviser for Merrill Lynch. He is survived by his wife, Stephanie Summers; son, Steve Summers of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Sherri Michael of Middleburg, Fla.; mother, Mona Powell of Benton; sister, Edie Jones of Benton; brother, Michael Fields of St Louis, Mo.; brother, Randy Summers of Modesto, Calif.; stepson, Dr. Kevin Shelton of O Fallon; stepdaughter, Sara Torbett of Jacksonville, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Jerry was loved by all who knew him. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved to fish and travel.
