WEST FRANKFORT -- Jack Podnar, 75, passed away at 1:25 a.m. March 18, 2014, in Franklin Hospital in Benton. He was born July 9, 1938, in West Frankfort, to Joseph Podnar and Evelyn (Fitzgerald ) Podnar. He married Carol (Cullen) Podnar on Jan. 21, 1967, and she survives. Besides his wife Carol, he is also survived by two sons, Matthew Podnar of West Frankfort, and Andy Podnar and wife, Kristen, of Belleville, Mich.; grandchildren, Louise Arseneau and Luke and Laurel Podnar; two sisters, Barbara Westell and husband, John of West Frankfort, and Rosanne Stitley of West Frankfort; one brother, John Podnar of West Frankfort; and sisters-in-law, Theresa and Herman Bandera, Florence Butta, both of West Frankfort, Mary and Bill Barber of Mobile, Ala., and Annabell Cullen of Santa Rosa Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents. Jack graduated from SIU Carbondale with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was retired as a pharmaceutical representative for Bristol-Myers Company. He had been in the hospital some time. He was a member of the Sesser Baptist Church. He was born July 21, 1914, in Scheller, the son of Harvey S. and Alta Eubanks Boswell. He was a salesman for Taylor Motor Co., Benton. He leaves his wife Thelma; a son, Warren Gayle, at home: daughters, Mrs. Zella Mae Bates of Sesser and Mrs. Norma Lee Scott of Steger; brothers, Jeff of Sesser, Harvey of Chicago and Howard of Wilmington; a sister, Mrs. Mary Alice Fitter of Chicago, and three grandchildren. I remember when both of these boys died within a few days of each other. Both were riding bicycles along hiways when they were struck by cars. The Roland boy is buried at Horse Prairie Cemetery, but I don't know where the Tittle boy is buried. I rode the same school bus as the Roland boy. Back then there were no school counselors available for students to talk to when tragedies like this happened. Lindell Tittle, 12, Route 1, Scheller, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Wayne D. Kirk, 19, Route 2, Robinson, said the glare from headlights on oncoming cars blinded him and he couldn't see the boy. Kirk was accompanied by two SIU students who were enroute to their homes for a long weekend. The students had gotten an early start, they said, because flu had caused classes to close one day early at SIU.

Roger Overton is part of my Bradley and Brown families. His mother Lana is the daughter of Rose Ann Bradley. I don't know who her biological father is. She was raised by Harley Thomas Melton. ZEIGLER -- Bill L. Hudgens, 78, of Milford, formerly of Zeigler, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2014, in Presence St. Mary's Hospital in Kankakee. Bill was born July 20, 1935, in Zeigler, the son of Clifford L. and Edna E. Megary Hudgens, and they preceded him in death. He married Judith A. Whalen on Dec. 29, 1963, in Kankakee, and she survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Lynn Ann (Troy) Hasselbring of Cissna Park; one son, Eric Charles (Valerie) Hudgens of Davis Junction; and six grandchildren, Hedy, Dane, Cole, Samantha, Taylor and Grace. Mr. Hudgens attended Milford United Methodist Church, was a board member for Milford Building and Loan Association and was a member of Milford Lions Club, several educational organizations and Pheasants Forever in Iroquois County. Bill was superintendent at Milford Grade School District 280 from 1966 to 1993. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and sports fan, especially of the St. Louis Cardinals. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 20, in Milford United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gene Turner officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Milford. Mr. LEFLER was born Jan. 19, 1925 in Zeigler to Joshua and Clara Elda (HEIPLE) LEFLER. He was a coal miner, veteran and POW in World War II, a life member of the West Frankfort VFW and a member of the Zeigler American Legion. He married Loma Faye WILLIAMS April 26, 1949 in Royalton and she preceded him in death Aug. 9, 1974.
